Blumenthal Hits Back at Trump for 'Nonsense' Personal Attacks About His Military Service

Blumenthal Hits Back at Trump for 'Nonsense' Personal Attacks About His Military Service

On Monday, President Trump defended Brett Kavanaugh in part by tearing apart the Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee. He had particularly choice words for Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), who claimed that placing Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court would forever be a "stain" on the institution. He has also stated that Trump's prior reluctance to call an FBI probe into the allegations against the nominee was "tantamount to a cover-up." So, Trump took that as an opportunity to zing Blumenthal this week for fabricating his military service back in 2010.

In a campaign speech Monday, Trump gave Blumenthal a new infamous nickname, "Da Nang Blumenthal."

"You have the great Vietnam War hero - who didn't go to Vietnam - [Sen. Richard] Blumenthal," Trump said . "How about Blumenthal? We call him 'Da Nang Blumenthal.'"

Blumenthal said the president is spewing "nonsense."

Snopes had different facts , noting that the claim Blumenthal misrepresented his military service was "mostly true."

Back in 2010, when Blumenthal was running for the Senate, he told a group of veterans he had served in Vietnam.

“We have learned something important since the days that I served in Vietnam,” Blumenthal said. “And you exemplify it. Whatever we think about the war, whatever we call it — Afghanistan or Iraq — we owe our military men and women unconditional support.”

Those remarks became pretty awkward after The New York Times obtained Blumenthal's Selective Service Record. The document showed he received five separate draft deferments while a college student and then, when those deferments ran out, secured a spot in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, which was not in Vietnam.

The Times exposed the misleading statement in a piece entitled, "Richard Blumenthal's Words on Vietnam Service Differ from History."

The senator later admitted he had "misspoken."

Trump noted it was more than just a mere misstatement, and it's especially relevant now that he's trying to assassinate Kavanaugh's character.

"For 15 years as the attorney general of Connecticut, he went around telling war stories," Trump told the crowd. "'People dying left and right -- but my platoon marched forward!' He was never in Vietnam. It was a lie. And then he's up there saying, 'We want the truth from Judge Kavanaugh.' And you're getting the truth from Judge Kavanaugh."

Me too. Air Force, 1964-1968...VietNam era, yes...VietNam service, no.

I spent my four years in Maine, and in Germany, having the time of my life.

I won’t even wear my USAF cap in public because people come up and thank me for my service...I don’t feel like I deserve that thanks for what I did in the Air Force was to get excellent training for a future civilian career, play in my band, and chase girls.

The only saving grace I might lean on is, I was IN, and I guess I was subject to being sent to VietNam, but I was never sent. The missiles I worked on went to Vietnam, so I guess that was my ‘indirect’ connection.

They always knew what they did for us was so damn important. When we met our LRRPs (affectionally known as Lurps) on the trail heading for pickup, we gave them water/rations and if needed a few guys to help them get any WIA to the pickup LZ. Great buncha guys. I can understand his surprise as not that many units had direct dealings with them.

We now have more people claiming to be Vietnam Veterans than were ever sent to Vietnam. I was with the 101st Air Mobile 69-72, 11 months in the A Shau at FOB Bastogne.

Misspoken? Blumenthal, when you concoct whole stories, that is more than a simple misstatement - it is a pattern of bald-faced lying.

Actually, she was a code talker in WWII, at Guadalcanal. This according to a report by Brian Williams, who was there.

I spent a year in Vietnam on a small airbase. I identify myself as a non combat veteran. Even at 21 I knew the difference.

Half my boot camp company was sent to 'nam in '71. I received a national defense ribbon for being active duty during the war but have always felt quite bad about it knowing what all the others sacrificed. All I did was state-side service, not of my choosing, of course. You go where you're told.

I don't know how you can say that. There were no "front lines" in Vietnam....

Don't believe what you read on the internet or see on TV. Most of those who served in Vietnam lived a relatively safe and routine life. They were safely ensconced on a secure base and provided administrative and logistics support to the war. A small minority lived "outside the wire" and fought, not the Viet Cong, but the Regular North Vietnamese Army. But all of them were in the combat zone and were expected to defend themselves and to contribute to the fight if required. The guys behind the wire did not want to wander out there in bad guys country. The guys out in the bush wished that they had learned how to type.

These people are called Vietnam Veterans. Blumenthal is not among them.

And even with that she would have had more Vietnam experience than Blumenthal.

Richard, you told a lie. A really bad lie in that you took fake service and valor credit from service people who actually serve and deserve it much more than you do.

You’re a liar Richard. Let that sink in.
