Canada dairy farmers unhappy after meeting Trudeau on trade deal

OTTAWA - Canadian dairy farmers met Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday to discuss his politically-risky move to open up the protected domestic market to U.S. industry but complained he had not given them details about compensation.

As part of the talks to complete the new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) trade deal, Canada offered 3.6 percent of its dairy market to the United States. It also promised to fully compensate farmers for any losses they might incur.

Trudeau held talks with members of the dairy lobby in Montreal to discuss their concerns. Farmers said afterwards they were not satisfied.

“The absence of details on measures to mitigate the impact of the concessions made within the USMCA, as well as the absence of a vision for the future of our industry at this time, cannot appease the concerns of the dairy farmers,” said Pierre Lampron, president of Dairy Farmers of Canada.

Officials have said Trudeau will mount a charm offensive in a bid to placate the farmers.

God bless the dairy farmers, but the reality is their livelihood is American made. Everything is invented in America.

They just tag along to our innovation

Man, 3.6 percent of the dairy business is “given” to the US plus Canada will pay their dairy farmers for any losses? Tough stuff.

“Pierre Lampron, president of Dairy Farmers of Canada.”

Why am I not surprised! In Canada, it's always the Quebecois for are the ones looking for “special attention.” Canada would be an infinitely easier place to govern, if it would just cut the French Canadians loose. They don't really think of themselves as Canadians first, but rather French, so give them what they want.

Well maybe Canada should have voted in an Alpha bad*ss to take on our Alpha bad*ss, instead of voting in Miss Beta-boy.

You get what you vote for.

While I agree with the overall point you’re trying to make, you’re entirely incorrect.

There’s been a lot of good stuff out of Canada as well, but the US has a much larger population therefor percentages are higher. The truth is we’re very good when we work together. We need to outlaw socialism and have the same Bill of Rights both us started with enforced.
