CIBOLO, Texas -- A Byron P. Steele High School student is recovering after being bitten by a small rattlesnake Friday morning.

Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District said the student was bitten in the breezeway just outside of the gym. Coaches in the area killed the snake immediately and the student was sent to the hospital.

Maintenance inspected the area and will treat it accordingly, according to the district. It also said a snake fence was installed in 2012 and replaced in 2015. It's inspected monthly and the latest inspection actually took place on Thursday.

Inspected Thursday and Friday a kid gets bit by a (small) rattlesnake?

Speaking of learning something new, I was not aware that snake fences actually worked.

Small rattlesnake. Where’s it’s mama and siblings?

This is Texas. There are rattlesnakes, copperheads, water moccasins, etc. My kitties bring in copperheads all the time. In as in in the house and drop them at my feet. Look, ma, we loooove you and brought you a present. Found one of their presents in the guestroom not long ago.

Well, based on this story, I'm not sure that they do.

I was born and reared in snake country. This is the first time I have ever heard of a snake fence.

My two dogs have had their rattlesnake vaccine shot.

It does not make them immune. It just buys them a couple of hours before treatment.

Baby snakes can be small enough to fit through that "snake fence." It might have crawled through shortly after birth and lived on the school grounds for a while.
