Baby snakes can be small enough to fit through that "snake fence." It might have crawled through shortly after birth and lived on the school grounds for a while.

Awwww, looks a bit like the rattler Mike Pierd (probably spelled his name wrong, sorry) squished into the ground with his crutch tip on the elementary school grounds in Beautiful Beaufort back in the day.

When my kids were young they found a nest of snake eggs and watched them hatch in a 5 gallon bucket. They’re born mean and struck at a stick within a few minutes of hatching.
