ISTANBUL — Turkey has concluded that Jamal Khashoggi, a prominent journalist from Saudi Arabia, was killed in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul earlier this week by a Saudi team sent “specifically for the murder,” two people with knowledge of the probe said Saturday.

Turkish investigators believe a 15-member team “came from Saudi Arabia. It was a preplanned murder,” said one of the people. Both spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation.

They offered no specific evidence to back up the account. Earlier Saturday, however, Turkey’s Anadolu news agency said the Istanbul public prosecutor’s office had opened a probe into Khashoggi’s disappearance. Turkish authorities have said that Khashoggi never left the consulate

What is this “murder team”?

Are the Turks going to arrest and try, and hopefully convict these murderers?

If a murder did happen the KSA embassy in Ankara then it happened on Saudi soil by diplomatic protocol. So even if the turkeys wanted to prosecute (unlikely, they just want to give the Saudis the finger) they wouldn't have legal standing.

They say that it was done “by a Saudi team sent “specifically for the murder,” two people with knowledge of the probe said Saturday. “

so, if it was a Saudi team, and it was done in the Saudi embassy, then the Saudis need to find and punish these murderers.

I can’t get the page to load properly, but here are a few observations:

The Erdogan government is quite willing to use legal resources for political ends, and has interred thousands of people on flimsy pretexts. So their words are untrustworthy.

The Turks and Saudis are long time rivals for influence in the Islamic world, and Turks and Arabs have a tradition of mutual hatred dating back to the Ottoman Empire.

The Saudis royal family (10,000 people strong of whom about 25% matter) 1) generally prefer to throw money at problems and hope they go away, 2) generally prefer to kick problem individuals out of the country, in hopes they become someone else’s problem, and 3) will get their hands dirty if they need to if 1) and 2) don’t solve the problem.

It is quite possible that the Saudis killed Mr.Khashoggi, but he would have to have been a very large burr in their saddle, and knowing that doing so in thier own consulate would both be unusual, and draw attention, but worth it to solve the problem.

However, you can’t trust the Turks word on it.

The only way I see the Saudis doing this is if this reporter was an enormous burr under their saddle.

Much of this story makes no sense for the Saudis to kill a reporter in their own consulate.

First – a murder in a consulate is a huge story world wide. Why attract that kind of attention when a murder on a side street is a daily event.

A 15 man hit team for reporter seems excessive. The more people involved the more opportunity for a screw up. Half that many should be more than enough.

Unless the damage that the reporter was to cause has not yet happened and this was a pre-emptive strike is it not better to wait until the reporter returns to SA and deal with him on your own turf. At home he can be charged with heresy and executed.

To me this sounds like Turkey trying to shift blame to SA for their own crime.

Turkey likely had some internal surveillance equipment in the consul or something like a mole. Turkey or sources, seem to say, they think the Saudis videotaped the killing as proof for back in Saudi Arabia according to MEE (Middle Eastern Eye). Maybe the police monitor the internet as well and caught something. Somehow, they know. Now, the Saudis are denying he was killed.

“Senior police source tells MEE that police believe Khashoggi’s suspected killing was videotaped ‘to prove the mission had been accomplished’”

You posted the same thing I just did, sorry, I did not see your post.

Middle East Eye is a bit biased but they still have some good reporting.

Middle East Eye, MEE for short, is a project of a writer for the guardian.co.uk liberal newspaper, it’s a sort of offshoot. But I saw the guy interviewed and he said, they do try to report the truth.

Sometimes, they will post diverse and different opinions. MEE is worth reading fairly often while knowing, they can look a bit leftwing per their editorial stances in general.

How could anyone believe that the same person who ordered the torture of his kinfolk in the Riyadh Ritz-Carleton would kill, and dismember a journalist who was critical of him? It strains credulity.

Our dear allies, the KSA are peace loving and kind. Just ask all those dead Yemeni children.
