The streets of New York aren’t paved with gold, but the sewers apparently are.

An employee in the city’s Department of Environmental Protection walked off with an astonishing $539,098 paycheck last year, according to records released by the Empire Center think tank.

Bhavesh Patel, a stationary engineer, clocked 1,992 overtime hours on top of his 2,086 regular hours, the city confirmed Friday.

That means he worked an average of 78 hours a week for 52 weeks, assuming he never called out sick or took a day of vacation.

His pay was also bolstered by back pay from a new contract settled after a 10-year dispute.

“New York’s sewers run 24 hours a day with more than 1 billion gallons of wastewater and these engineers protect public health by ensuring it all flows in the right direction,” said DEP spokesman Ted Timbers, trying to explain the eye-popping figure.

I have no problem with his salary as long as there are like only 10 of him/her working it.

He had quite the work ethic and all things considered, it’s reasonable.

And his pension will now go up considerably. That is the more sickening part of this fraud here. Municipal unions and democrat politicians have screwed all of their taxpayers.

“ensuring it all flows in the right direction”

I always did have difficulty getting my toilets to flush down.

A stationary engineer likely doesn’t do anything but call in other union people to make adjustments or repairs. I seriously don’t think NYC got their money’s worth out of this.

Yes, 78 hours/week for 52 weeks in a row...

Not many Americans work that many long hours.

If he was really working and not just on cell phone chatting, he well deserves it.

Years ago I was sent to a NYC home office for insurance training. One of the other trainees (in his 20s) admitted that this was his second choice for a job and he was just biding his time until the other offer materialized. His dream job: New York City garbageman. He said he could make a good living and with overtime put in near the end of the 20 years, have a great retirement in Florida.

The fella probably needs to make that much in order to pay the rent and taxes there.

The biggest racket going. My SILs father was one in NYC. Biggest slacker you ever met. A drunk too.

His normal pay would be over $106/hr or about 212k per year.
