I thought the unemployment number was the number of people who got jobs during the month and those who filed claims for unemployment during the month.

Nope. It is simply those who consider themselves “actively looking for work.”

By default, when your unemployment insurance payments run out, you aren’t actively “looking,” unless you are surveyed by the government. However, everyone getting unemployment is automatically included as “looking.”
