Robert Redford: ‘I Feel Out of Place in the Country I Was Born Into’

"Our civil servants have failed us," he said in a statement.

______

Robert Redford may be done acting, but he’s not riding off into the sunset anytime soon. The actor, filmmaker, and Sundance Film Festival founder published “A Brief Statement About Big Things” on the Sundance Institute’s website yesterday, writing that he feels “out of place in the country I was born into” for the first time he can remember and that he has “watched with sadness as our civil servants have failed us.”

The overtly political speech was published the same day that Brett Kavanaugh’s ascension to the Supreme Court following a nasty confirmation process that once again emphasized how bitterly divided the country has become. Neither Kavanaugh nor anyone else is mentioned by name, but Redford citing “bigotry, mean-spiritedness, and mockery as the now-normal tools of the trade” suggests his anger probably isn’t directed at Amy Klobuchar.

Redford tries to make a comeback:

“But I want to encourage you to dig deep for hope and civility right now—to try to make connections with people you disagree with, to be better than our politicians. “We don’t have to share the same motivations to want the same outcomes. Let’s focus on each other, and strengthening our communities, and reflecting on what’s happening. Let’s live in justice and respect and let others fight it out now to the bitter ends."

He was the George Clooney of his time. Overrated and so convinced of his own importance, but never did much for others.

I don’t think of politicians as Civil Servants.

They are apparently representative of those who elect them.

Robert Redford - didn’t he refuse to even sit down with Pres George W Bush to discuss issues? that told me how much he desired civil open discourse.

Many of the comments below the article are right on! Redford is a highly overrate actor in my opinion.

...try to make connections with people you disagree with...

You mean connections like shooting at them as they play baseball? You mean connections like clubbing them or kicking them as they state their opinion? You mean connections like sending them death threats or mailing them envelopes filled with white powder?

Is this what you mean by "being better than our politicians"?

Redford should move to Cuba if he feels that way. He won’t, of course.

“I’ll stay here and fight for meaningful change.” Yeah, right. From your mansion, you will.

Funny how liberals think they’re the good guys. They’re like the dead people in The Sixth Sense who don’t realize they’re dead. Except in their case they don’t realize they’re the bad guys.

Robert Redford supported the weather underground. I guess he thought it was cool. He has beloved every left wing nut principle since the 60’s. He used his fame and money for this purpose. It is good that now he feels out of place and disenfranchised as the nation lurches back to jobs, economy, a more fair legal system, anti terrorism, anti illegal everything. His beloved left wing nuts and the weather underground don’t believe in conversation, they pick political violence. I suspect Redford probably supports Antifa too.

My fellow Americans, believe me that these people only want civil conversation when you have fought back and they are on the ropes.
