She worked her butt off on that speech. As someone who drafts questions and makes arguments, you don’t just rattle off what someone else wrote for you. That speech was from her deepest convictions.

She played it brilliantly. Most of the media was hoping Collins would announce she was voting no. As a result, they all carried the speech live so the whole nation would see Judge Kavanaugh's hopes of confirmation go down in flames. Instead, Senator Collins methodically took apart all of the allegations against him, and presented a well thought out case for his confirmation. I'll bet a lot of network executives were kicking themselves afterwards for their decision to carry the speech.

Yes, bingo. Some say her argument will be studied for years to come as one of the best political statements ever. She is a star.

COLLINS "...in the face of the hysterical mobs whipped up by the Democrats to intimidate pro-Kavanaugh senators,
we must always remember that it is when passions are most inflamed that fairness is most in jeopardy............."

Still, despite Collins' most memorable speech, I believe Americans were most disgusted by Democrats
kneeling in obeisance to Ford after she testified. Democrats BJ'ing Ford on ntl TV was not a pretty sight.

Sorry, am not on the Collins train. Since announcement of the nomination, the administration, Senate GOP, Trump & Kavanaugh supporters, and the media were worried about how two Repuican senators, because they are so rabidly anti-life, would vote. Earlier this year, Murkowski and Collins killed a bill that would restrict abortion after 20 weeks. Collins is more like a Democrat than even a RINO, and her @** had to be kissed for three months to get her to vote yes. No thanks. All liberal GOPe’rs should be primaried during their reelections.

I will do my best to post the Florida “mail-in” ballots cast everyday. You know in Florida the Democrats always out vote the Republicans in mail-in & early voting. Then, the Republicans out vote the Democrats on election day voting. The “Florida” mail-in votes get posted every morning at 7:15 AM (EST). My belief is that both Scott & DeSantis will easily win their races for the Senate & Governor.

If Andrew Gillum ever wins the Florida Governorship....he will destroy the economic viability of this great state in one or two years. IMHO...any Florida voter that casts his or her vote for Gillum is either high on drugs, booze or, they are just simply insane!!! I believe Scott & DeSantis will get tons of both Democrat & Independent votes along with massive Republican votes. We shall soon know the outcome. keep your fingers crossed, pray to the boss upstairs and get and vote for Scott, desantis and your Republican candidate for Congress. Our congress guy is Brian Mast, FL18thCD.

Possibly, but it was a marvelous speech, and rang so true. And she delivered it with the statesmanship that the moment needed and deserved.

Why can't we (MA) have a U.S senator like Susan Collins?

Why can't our guys make a speech like that?

After all, this is intellectual, sophisticated and progressive Massachusetts, not backwoods Maine.

You just answered your own question, Mr. Lucas.

To anyone from outside The Gay State who might ask this question all I'd say is “you've never been to Cambridge,Brookline or Newton, have you!”

But Collins is good for one thing......the number of Republican Senators that gives us the ‘control’ of the Senate. And the ONE THING McConnell has been good at is getting judges confirmed, which wouldn’t happen if the Dems had control of the Senate. Collins is the most conservative Senator that Maine will give us. At least she did right by us with this vote.

While Collins found Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony to be “sincere, painful and compelling.../// I found it to be a lie fairly quickly. What took Collins so long?

I don't think that Collins necessarily believed Ford. Did something happen in the past to Ford? Could have and Collins gave her the benefit of the doubt. And then took the Dems to the woodshed. Good for her. I don't care who wrote her speech, I'm glad she gave it.

She wrote her epitaph. Her Opus like the days of old.

She burned all of her political goodwill in Maine and the the Northeast by making that speech.

I would love to know why. It wasn’t a speech of angry passion, it was cold. Thought out. Calculating. It was the speech of someone who was pushed so far over the edge that burning down all the bridges behind her was a logical step.

I tip my hat to her. Collins and I have never agreed with much politically, and I did not expect her to vote for Kavanaugh. My first though was that “Something mad her mad”. After further reflection, I am sure of it. This isn’t about Kavanaugh, this is about something in her core that she realized “I can’t sacrifice this.”.

I respect her for that.

Yes, yes I do. Senators aren’t just off writing their own speeches - they look at drafts and ask for tweaks, give a very general guideline, etc.., but they don’t take time to write speeches. Hell, they don’t write the legislation that they sponsor (in large part their aides do that).

What makes you thinks she sat and authored the speech all by her lonesome?

it’s silly to think that this wasn’t a concerted effort and she was simply the vehicle chosen to deliver the statement. She may agree wholeheartedly and have had input, but she wasn’t the sole author of it - no bloody way!

The claim was:

...not b[y] her staff, but by a conglomeration of the repub majority.

I guarantee it was her and her staff, especially a legal advisor. No Senate 'majority' would butt in such a way.
