William & Mary Police are investigating after a statue of James Monroe was graffitied with the words “slave owner” late last month.
A crime log the school sent out Monday says a “non-student” was detained for writing on a statue at 1:36 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 outside Tucker Hall.
University spokeswoman Erin Zagursky said William & Mary Police have identified and spoken to a suspect, but no charges had been sought as of Monday afternoon.

William and Mary was one of the colleges my father and I visited in the summer of 1964 after finishing my junior year of high school. I had good grades but stellar SAT scores so getting in there and elsewhere was no problem and money wasn’t either. My father and mother loved Colonial Williamsburg and would have relished opportunities to visit. A lot of the students worked as wait staff in the restaurants and they were all attractive, well-spoken and self-assured. I recall the climate was too humid for my tastes and I ended up elsewhere. Years later I figured out that the best school in Williamsburg is nicknamed “The Farm”.

During Monroe’s time it was called the era of good feelings. He almost became the second President to get a uniamous electoral college win. One delegate changed his vote so that George Washington was the only President so honored.

Why not just skip playing the slavery card altogether, unless you have a purpose in shaming the slave states: New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Delaware, and Maryland.

No, I just admire him. But my g-grandfather’s eldest brother was present at Fredericksburg when The Gallant Pelham earned his sobriquet for shelling the Union lines with his two cannon.
