Heitkamp Opposed Kavanaugh Due to His ‘Body Language’ at Hearing (watched with the sound off)
National Review ^ | October 9, 2018 | JACK CROWE

Senator Heidi Heitkamp (D., N.D.) said on Monday that she had been prepared to support Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation until she viewed his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee with the sound turned off in order to focus on his “body language.”

Heitkamp, a red-state Democrat who was under significant pressure to back Kavanaugh as she faces a challenge from Republican congressman Kevin Cramer in the midterms, said she ordered her staff to draft a statement announcing her support for the nominee but reversed herself after detecting “rage” in his testimony.

“I was concerned about these allegations but willing to give him the benefit of the doubt,” Heitkamp told CNN in an interview.

“It’s something I do,” she added, explaining why she watched the hearing without volume. “We communicate not only with words, but with our body language and demeanor. I saw somebody who was very angry, who was very nervous, and I saw rage that a lot of people said, ‘Well, of course you’re going to see rage; he’s being falsely accused.’ But it is at all times you’re to acquit yourself with a demeanor that’s becoming of the Court.”

Kavanaugh, who was confirmed to the Court last Saturday, testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee earlier this month after being accused of sexual assault by Christine Blasey Ford, in addition to misconduct allegations from two other women.

Following Kavanaugh’s testimony, in which he forcefully denied assaulting Ford at a high-school party, he was heavily criticized by Democratic lawmakers for displaying partisanship in referring to the accusations as a “political hit” carried out as “revenge,” in part for his role in Bill Clinton’s impeachment.

I look forward to watching her concession speech with the sound off. What if a Republican senator said he dismissed Ford's testimony by watching her with the sound off?

Doesn’t even rise to the level of lame excuse.

It does, however, rise to the level of dereliction of duty in office.

The man and his family were put through h**l. It’s normal he would be upset.

She did not do her duty by listening to what he had to say. Why not record it, listen to it, then watch it silently? I suppose this person has a degree in the field?

Anyway, it’s impossible to judge his body language without the context of what he was saying.

What a ditz. That should close that 10-point polling gap. Why not just say the truth lady, Chucky Schumer owns you, go live with that in your retirement.

I know a guy who was a Marine CID agent. They trained in Kinesic interrogation techniques (tells, tics etc) by watching interrogations with sound off and finding the lies.

He was a professional, not a Senator whose only professional skill is getting elected.

I wonder if she watched Ford the same way.

With that fake little girl voice, I almost tossed my cookies. It was enough to gag a maggot.

What a novel idea! Why don’t we install cones of silence in all the courtrooms of the land. The jury will just watch the body language of burglers, theifs, murderers, rapists, speeders to determine the guilt of the defendants, without the needless testimony.

If anything, it was Ford’s body language that was troubling - playing “cutesy”, with the dirty glasses and “poor widdle me” body movements, hair over the eyes, and so on.

Michael Dukakis lost a Presidential election because he was not upset at a hypothetical question.

Brett Kavanaugh was ridiculed because he showed controlled fury at his very character being seriously assassinated.

Maybe it won't be a speech. Maybe she'll get up there and present a whole lot of body language. <^..^>

Was not letting vulnerable dem Senators vote for Kavanaugh a mistake by Schumer? I'm wondering what was going on. (I'll say this now, before the vote not on a thread). Kavanaugh could've been defeated if by nothing else his resume being way too much like just about everyone else in that DC inner circle. I'm not even sure he's strong enough to not be another John Roberts.

That's another thing. Dems like to blackmail people into voting their way. Why didn't they keep allegations about Kavanaugh's decades-ago past private until a crucial vote come up? For some reason, the dems calculated that fear of mob rule would scare independents into voting for them.

What's going to happen if Ginsburg can't be kept alive for another year or so? If there are more conservative Republican US Senators, the next choice won't depend on Flake, Murkowski, and Collins. Isn't there a pro-life woman on the short list?

Thinking as I type....there's still a lot that's baffling about what could've become descent into mob rule if not for that over-reach in the elevator with Jeff Flake. Does anyone have any thoughts that make sense out of what happened?

Seems like I have seen a meme about Senator Heidi ignoring an abuse issue at one of the schools on an indian reservation.

Having the “sound off” must be a long-term trait.

Heidi, I was turned off by Hillary Clinton’s body language when they tossed her into that van like a side of beef. I didn’t like the way she twitched.

You twit. After they vote you out of office, please take up knitting rather than a make-work, make-trouble Dem crony job.
