Britain May Require Companies to Report Race Pay Gap
New York Times ^ | October 11, 2018 | Amie Tsang

Companies in Britain would have to report pay disparities among ethnic groups in their work force under a rule being considered by Prime Minister Theresa May’s government.

The idea is a response to a study published last year that showed significant pay disparities between ethnic minorities and their white counterparts in Britain. It comes after the government began requiring large companies to report pay disparities between men and women.

“Too often ethnic minority employees feel they’re hitting a brick wall when it comes to career progression,” Mrs. May said in a statement.

The Race Disparity Audit, a survey of 24,000 workers last year, found that white British adults were much more likely to be employed and to own their own homes than people from ethnic minorities.

The audit found that the unemployment rate for black, Asian and other ethnic-minority people, at 8 percent, was nearly double that of white British adults, at 4.6 percent. It also found that people who identified themselves as Pakistani, Bangladeshi or black received the lowest average hourly pay among ethnic groups.

“Over all, the findings will be uncomfortable,” Mrs. May said when that report was released. “But it’s right that we’ve identified them, shone a light on them and we need to confront these issues that we have identified.”

When Britain’s government started requiring companies with over 250 employees to report their gender pay gaps last year, it found that average pay for men was higher than that for women at more than three-quarters of the 10,000 businesses that reported. Over all, it found the gender pay gap in Britain was just over 18 percent. Many hope that as the data accumulates and is publicized, businesses will be forced to do more to reduce the gap.

Teresa May, the Conservative prime minister, is no Margaret Thatcher. I bet many Democrats support this here. Once companies disclose "pay gaps" they will be pressured to fix them. Of course, in a free market, companies that discriminate on the basis of race in hiring and pay will be out-competed by companies that don't. So racial pay gaps reflect gaps in skills and productivity, but you are not supposed to say that.

We were well on our way to having to do this under Obama.

If we don't vote in November we could be a step closer here in the USA.

Small skill, small pay.

That’s the deal.

A number cannot tell you why that person is earning what they earn.

To take a number solely on its own to claim it to be an unfair bias is absurd.

Add in, who works overtime, add in years of experience in the specific field, add in gaps of unemployment, add in what their starting salary was that they agreed to and accepted, add in the promotion increases they agreed to and accepted, add in their personal performance of the job and how that impacts raises and promotions, add in what kind of job it is they have, add in what the industry average for that type of job is,

and then add in salary and you have the proper context to see how men and womens salaries compare.

BHO did. One of his first acts as POTUS, iirc.

Don't you remember that idiot secretary that kept working for crappy pay under her own volition?

Businesses had to start keeping records to address her stupidity/naïveté.

I had a roommate in the 1980s that figured out he was under paid, by at least 50%, and found a new job.

Another colleague said that he was offered a job by a NASA contractor for around half the going rate for new grads at t time.

Pay everyone the same. From the Prime Minister to teachers to garbage collectors. The exact same.

Marx, Mao, and other fascists would approve.

Europe is just starting to find out the troubles they bought themselves when they imported people of a particular race in their country.
