Lightning puts prep football schedule in a state of flux (Stops Torrey Pines Game Coached by Cousin)

Rain and lightning were the order of the evening across most of the county Friday.

At Torrey Pines, it was Mother Nature that won the Avocado League game between No. 6-ranked San Marcos and No. 1 Torrey Pines.

With lightning all around, the officials waited to halftime to delay the game.

Fans were asked to move to the gym for safety.

But a 30-minute delay turned into a postponement when bolts of lightning lit up the western horizon, getting uncomfortably close to the stadium as the thunder rang down.

Torrey Pines officials were trying to determine if the game would be resumed today or wiped out entirely.

Rain is RARE in Southern California this time of year. Lightning is even rarer. In fact when I lived there I only remember lightning when there was hail. Well, in weather reports I found out it did hail last night in the San Diego area. As a result, the game played by the UNDEFEATED Torrey Pines Falcons (7-0) coached by my cousin Ron GLADNICK was cancelled.

All but two of Allen’s (TX) games have been delayed because of lightning so far this season. Last night was just kind of misty, but no lightning.

Lightning is EXTREMELY rare in Southern Cal. I only remember it happening when there was hail which happened last night. And rare as hail is in Southern Cal., it is even RARER that it happens in October. I remember it ONLY during the winter months. Global Cooling?

I don’t know if there is time for the make-up game...

In CIF SS, the regular high school football season will be over this month...It is probably the same in San Diego Section...Football season started earlier than usual this year...

Pretty common around here ... but not this time of year. It’s been crazy.
