Danger Zone: National Security Adviser John Bolton warned the Chinese government this week over increasingly dangerous confrontations in the South China Sea with U.S. warships sailing in international waters, noting that Navy rules allow for a response to provocations.
The warning came about a week after reports noted that a Peoples Liberation Army Navy destroyer nearly collided with a U.S. Navy destroyer near one of Chinas manmade islands in the SCS.
In discussing the dangerous encounter with the USS Decatur, Bolton said the U.S. Navy warships are permitted to respond with force to protect themselves and their crews from threatening actions taken against them on the high seas.
The commanders have the authority we need, Bolton told radio host Hugh Hewitt.

Yes, they can.
Yes, they will.
And as soon as they show the will to directly confront the Chinese PLAN, the Chinese will back off. Not before.
Nobody beats the US Navy at sea. Nobody.
In fact it’s not even close.
Especially with the help of the US Air Force.
A single B-1B can carry 24 of these:
It’s also a weapon that will be fitted to the F/A-18 and F-35.
While China has some nice cartoons and Soviet technology dressed up to look like the real thing, the US Navy has proven platforms that work.
Every time.
And under pressure.
I don’t want a war with China over the South China Sea.
The US cannot handle another war in Asia, nor should it.
and maybe we’ll see the emergence of the Chinese naval prototype rail gun become operational ...
Yes, just give the South China sea to the Chinese Communists.
While we are at it, give them Taiwan.
Then give them Vietnam.
Then give them Australia.
Then give them India.
Then give them the Phillipenes.
Then give them the rest of the Pacific.
Why stop there? The U.S. doesn't really need freedom of the seas./S If the U.S. will not defend freedom of the seas, who will?
So, now we know one of the top choices for U.N. ambassador.
I dont want a war with China over the South China Sea.

Doesn’t mater what you want. If China wants it, China will get it! The South China Sea does NOT belong to China. Free passage is guaranteed by the US NAVY.
Commodore Stephen DECATUR once said, “My country, in her intercourse with foreign nations, may she ever be right, but my country, right or wrong.” He was the hero of Tripoli.
“and maybe well see the emergence of the Chinese naval prototype rail gun become operational ...”
That would not be a threat to stand off weapons or their platforms.
None.
Peace comes through strength and having the resolve to use force if necessary.
Surely China must know by now not to mess with Trump. If Trump says something, he means it.
The idea is that any war against China would include Japan and Australia. Perhaps even the Philippines, Vietnam, and India.
The US wouldn’t be fighting alone.
However, if we don’t stand up to bullying by China then our security agreements with all our allies would be weakened and make war much more probable.
That would not be a threat to stand off weapons or their platforms

Perhaps perhaps not, it would depend on the encounter and whether or not the Chinese rail gun platform is recognized as a threat - rail gun concealed on a junk, a container ship, a tramp for instance or a barge like the prototype is mounted on now.
The long and short of it though is economically China can't afford to go to war short term gains maybe, long term defeat. They will posture and bloviate but in the end they will always back down.
Lots of times big guys don't know how to fight, everyone doesn't mess with them because they are big thus they never learn how to fight - this is China. The US on the other hand is a big guy who knows how to fight as we are always warring with somebody
I did a post recently what I heard by expert on JohnBatchelorShow they have or are working on a neat thing to handle the SCS Chinc Island: Land Mines, or just Mines.
On a B-something. Can lay a line of them — from very high up and not directly over target. Neat
Preventing coming and going.
I strongly agree with you
Nobody wants a war with China - the ability and willingness, clearly stated, can be a huge deterrent.
