Get the Goober-mint out of the disaster “insurance” business and we would see fewer folks building in disaster prone zones.

3 days supply on hand.
Cash on hand.
Keep the tank full.
Go Packs at the ready.
Rendezvous place established.
Contact chain in place.
Etc etc etc . . .

I’ve pretty much been prepping since about 2009.

What little I could do. Some of it was food donated to a church.

It all came in handy. Used all of it (gave some to friends later - small amount that was coming up on expiration).

While most people were very grateful, I saw at least one that acted .... how shall I say? .... Entitled?

They haven’t been able to afford to do that thing in years (at the church). I’m glad they did it when they could.

I still prep. I rotate stock. I can at least prep food and drink.

Gee, they’re describing churches and civic clubs.
It’s as though people in government are unaware those things exist.

A few years ago anyone who was a “prepper” was deemed a potential militant domestic terrorist. This perception discouraged quite a few from even trying to prep for disasters because they were afraid of guilt by association and didn’t want a Ruby Ridge on their home. Damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

I canned 71 jars of tomato juice this summer and 11 jars of tomato soup. Am I a terrorist also? Lots of green peppers in the freezer to.

There are laws on the books that you are suspect if you have more than 7 days worth of food stored.

I just told people I did it because I remembered a certain squall line that wiped out the power north and northwest of town, for miles around, for close to a week. Lost everything in my fridge and freezer, the area stores were all closed till power was back (and they had to dump most of their fresh/frozen stock anyway)...and I wasn’t going to be caught flatfooted like that again. They actually agreed with me!

We started prepping about 10 years ago. We keep one year of food and 165 gallons of drinking water in the garage. Because ya never know.

Prepper Ping : Right from FEMA encouraging "Prepping"

TexasKamaAina:" FEMA administrator encourages individual responsibility for disaster preparedness."

A short, 2 minute video, whereby the FEMA director talks about building a "Culture of Preparednes".
Most uninformed citizens feel that it is the government's responsibility to provide food, housing, and shelter following a natural disaster,
and to provide it out of government largess funds, despite a chronic, failing infrastructure as happened recently in Puerto Rico.
Most of us have experienced tornadoes and/or hurricanes during our lifetime, but many of our neighbors are not prepared.
Hurricanes present an unusual series and combination of natural catastrophes of wind, rain, and flooding
which can last for weeks, as we have recently seen in the Carolinas.
Storm surge of 15- 18 feet are no longer uncommon, especially depending on the strength of the hurricane at land-fall.
Much good counsel is given here by many of the forum posters,
and don't forget to have a reasonable supply of over-the-counter, and prescriptive medications,
and sufficient pet food in your home storage.
Pets are our family too ! H/T : TADSLOS

Wait just a minute. Last time she spoke it was to ridicule preppers for hoarding food and supplies.

We came close to a disaster last week with floods up river. Thankfully, the cubically bound ninnies in commie Austin finally learned how to open downstream, rather than up stream, dam flood gates. Another rush of water is to come down today but all should be fine. Of course, nothing compared to the hurricane damage.

I have family members on the east coast of Florida who have always been well prepared......but are now revamping their plans for evacuation after this Cat 4 hit the gulf side. They had never seen a Cat 4 in the gulf hit and usually by the time it hits the coast it’s a Cat 1 or 2.....this has changed their thinking even on the west coast of Florida. Especially since it grew so rapidly overnight.

I’m not so concerned with prepping now with Trump.

During bad weather, I make sure to keep extra water on hand. We have a well so that’s the least of our concerns.

The plan this week is to organize the pantry. We’ve been eating down the freezer - because it needs to be done every so often. No matter how neat I try to keep it, there’s always things that get lost and I’m very much opposed to wasting food. Tossing food is the same as flushing money down the toilet.
