We sure do need all the help we can get. I’m working on district courts now and I found NJ wasn’t as bad as I had expected, if President Trump fills the 4 vacancies we could see a sea change. It will be tied if the one pending nomination is confirmed and then there are 3 more open spots to fill.
District of New Jersey
R appointed 6
D appointed 7
Vacancies 4 (1 nomination pending)
Thank you for the excellent summary of D vs R Justices by circuit.
1st: 4-2 RAT (No vacancies.)
2nd: 7-4 RAT (2 vacancies.)
3rd: 7-6 RAT (There is one more vacancy here, and Trump can tie this with another appointment.)
4th: 8-7 RAT (No vacancies.)
5th: 11-5 Republican (1 Vacancy.)
6th: 11-5 Republican (No vacancies.)
7th: 9-2 Republican (No vacancies.)
8th: 10-1 Republican (No vacancies.)
9th: 16-7 RAT (6 Vacancies.)
10th: 7-5 RAT (No vacancies.)
11th: 6-6 (No vacancies.)
DC Circuit: 7-3 RAT (1 Vacancy.)
Federal Circuit: 8-4 RAT (No vacancies.)
4th: 8-7 RAT (No vacancies.)
We have chosen to count this differently. Roger Gregory was nominated by Clinton and Bush was President when the nomination was approved.
This circuit is either 9 Demoncrat or 8 depending on how you count and 6 or 7 Republican appointed.
Even if we do Democrats-leftists will still comprise a majority of judges at the appellate level.
BTTT.
Thank you for all the work you did preparing this chart.
There are bound to be a few typos. I was tired but wanted to finish. Apologies.
Western Wisconsin is reversed 2 Dem 0 Republican.
Yes, you have a valid point. It’s probably better to call him a RAT because he is a liberal judge.
What. A. Great. List.
Wow! Nice work!!!
Yup, serious progress, and a ways to go.
This is why I place so much emphasis on those circuit court appointments. When Obama came to office, most appointees were by Republican presidents and most circuit courts had a Strict Constructionist majority. Obama got to appoint 55 judges to the circuit courts and flipped several of them. Trump has now had 29 confirmed and this has started to flip some of them back in our favor. IIRC there are 11 more seats open right now and 179 circuit court judges in total. I’m not sure how many open up in an average year but obviously there will be a few in the next couple years. Hopefully with a few Senate seat pickups in November, Trump will have been able to have at least 45 on the circuit courts by the end of his first term. That will go a long way toward countering the damage Obama did. With a second term, Trump will be able to out appoint Obama and leave the circuit courts in better shape than they were in before Obama took office.
I’m also hoping Trump gets to replace Clarence Thomas and 3 of the Gang of Four on the SCOTUS by the end of his 2nd term.
Thanks!.
Even if Republicans keep control of the Senate in the Nov. 6 midterm elections, the balance of power on these courts isn’t going to change in the next two years.

Ok, granted, there probably are more Democrat Federal Judges than Republican Federal judges and that’s a bad thing and we all know that.
But, I’ve been in those court rooms and 99% of the cases that run through them have not a damn thing to do with politics.
So, the premise of the writer’s point that this factor is some kind of colossal disadvantage to the average Joe citizen is ridiculous.
Occasionally we do have an environmental case that does come through and most of the time the Democrat judge can be expected to rule for the liberals but even then not all the time.
I agree.
I particularly agree that the situation in Federal Courts overall is good for Republicans and Conservatives when you start at the Top and work your way down.
