Abrams was asked if she’ll ‘take away’ guns. Here’s a detailed look at her [disingenuous] response
Politically Georgia ^

Posted on 10/15/2018 6:17:15 AM PDT by Lazamataz

Stacy Abrams is attempting to become Governor of Georgia. One of her primary focuses is gun control and gun bans. From the article:

Near the end of Stacey Abrams’ latest town hall meeting, she heard a question that’s become a near-ritual at these events. A voter wanted to know if talk that Abrams “is going to take away all of the guns” is correct.

Her gun stance is a key factor in the race, not least because she embraces firearms restrictions and openly wars with the gun lobby, a shift that breaks with the party’s decades-old political approach to the debate in Georgia.

Below is an annotation of how she answered that question at the McDonough event, with her remarks in italics:

“I am not planning to confiscate and ban guns. This is what I say. I grew up in Mississippi. My great-grandmother taught me how to shoot a shotgun early. “She taught me two things: One, only shoot things you plan to eat if you’re going to go hunting. I basically eat chicken, so it’s pretty much a wash...."
The case that “responsible” gun owners would demand new restrictions was one of the main arguments Abrams made during that nominating contest, and it’s carried over to the general election phase.

It also reflects another core pitch from Abrams: That demanding new limits on guns isn’t a liberal value, but a mainstream one. Her campaign often cites a recent Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll that shows most Georgia voters support additional gun restrictions.

“We need waiting periods because we know that we need time to find out what’s happened. We should make certain that no violent offender, especially a domestic abuser, has the ability to terrorize domestic abusers with a gun. “We have to make certain that automatic weapons and semi-automatic weapons that fire high-caliber rounds, that assault weapons are not allowed in Georgia.”
She’s referring to her support of the 2016 proposal banning assault weapons, which was authored by Democratic state Rep. Mary Margaret Oliver and never gained any traction.

Left unmentioned is the part of the measure that would give state authorities authority to impound those weapons, a line that Second Amendment boosters such as Georgia Gun Owners have pounced on.

“We have to make sure that we understand that being violent doesn’t mean you’re mentally ill. Being mentally ill doesn’t mean you’re violent. But we’ve got to address both sides of that coin, and that’s why Medicaid expansion is so important because it provides access to mental health treatment and to support throughout the state of Georgia.”

(Laz's note....here, she becomes positively Orwellian)

“I want common sense gun regulation because I believe in the Second Amendment.

We should make certain that no violent offender, especially a domestic abuser, has the ability to terrorize domestic abusers with a gun.

Is there a big problem with this? Domestic abusers terrorizing domestic abusers? I would call that situation a win-win.

To Stacy:

Define "high caliber" rounds.

Define "assault weapon".

Define "semi-automatic" weapon.

I woulnd’t be so sure, MNJohnnie. Like Tennessee and Texas, these Southern Governors traveled the country doing their level best to lure the Tech Industry and all its high paying jobs. Problem is, there’s only so many native Georgians, Texans and Tennesseans to take those jobs. So, where do the rest of the tech folks come from? The Northeast, West Coast and places like Chicago and Michigan. And what do they bring with them? They bring a pocketful of cash that they earned selling their overpriced home on Long Island, but a house 2-3 times the size, while paying about 60-70% less in taxes, and then bring all their liberal ideology with them. They don’t adapt to the Southern Way, Texan Way, Tennessean Way of life. They move to Atlanta and few of it’s suburbs, Austin, Chattanooga, Nashville, Greenville, and completely transform the place to the liberal, hipster ShangriLa they’ve always wanted.

They have enough money that they don’t care about their taxes. They don’t hunt or shoot guns, so they don’t care that Abrams wants to ban them. They don’t care about anything other than keeping their liberal, hipster neighborhoods as liberal, hipster, & WHITE as they can. And, as with most states in the US, the folks in the densely populated cities, make the rules for the rest of the state. Pick any state that leans to the Left and pretty much the entire state can be described as, RED, the cities described as, BLUE, and the BLUE folks make the rules.

So, even though she’s a financial train wreck, she wants to ban and confiscated guns, she’s an avowed Socialist, she’s advocated for illegals to vote, she’s got a better chance than one would think. The race is going to be very close....Unfortunately.

“We have to make certain that automatic weapons and semi-automatic weapons that fire high-caliber rounds, that assault weapons are not allowed in Georgia.”

Pardon me, but isn’t the civilian ownership of fully automatic firearms in the United States very strictly regulated already (basically prohibited through grandfathering since 1986 and that being photographed and fingerprinted and going through extensive FBI background checks and paying expensive transfer taxes was in effect already since the 1930s) at the federal level? Also, if fully automatic rifles were really a serious problem, I’d expect Switzerland to be a very extremely violent country.

Because she promised FREE EVERYTHING. So, she has the black vote, the liberal-hipster-socialist-ANTIFA-BLM-LBGTQ vote, and she’ll get some of the old school Southern Democrat(most of whom are more Conservative than they know themselves) who will touch the screen for the Dem out of reflex.

And she promised FREE EVERYTHING

Stacy, why do the local police in your state have thousands of machine guns? What law enforcement function is served by a fully automatic weapon? Citizens face the same threats as the police so why don’t the citizens deserve the same ability to defend themselves as the police?

The rest of her gun speak seems a lot like how politicians want to put the short end of the wedge in by looking moderate and respectful in their views. But in reality, they want to put that short end of the wedge in and make it much bigger.
