Last week, federal authorities fined Munilla Construction Management $25,868 for “serious” safety violations in its role as the contractor on the Florida International University bridge that collapsed in March, killing six people.
The morning after the collapse, Juan Perez, director of the Miami-Dade Police Department, said the department’s homicide squad would explore criminal charges for contractors such as MCM.
“We’ve got to look at the reality that there may be some negligence down the line,” Perez said.
Perez answers to Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez, who appointed him director in January 2016.
Miami-Dade is the only county in Florida where the Mayor picks who runs the police department. The other 66 counties have elected sheriffs who answer to the people. Amendment 10, which will be decided by Florida voters this November, would mandate that constitutional officers such as sheriffs be elected by the people.
Because of this unique situation — where the head of the police department answers to Gimenez and not Florida voters — it’s important to look at the concerning relationship between the Mayor and MCM, one of the contractors police will investigate.
The Munilla family has deep ties to Gimenez and have been very generous in their political donations, giving thousands to the Mayor and City Commissioners over the years. Since 2011, when Gimenez became Mayor, MCM has been paid $147,739,470 by Miami-Dade County according to the county’s disbursement database, one of the highest totals for any company operating in the county.

As a Construction worker on many job sites, not an engineer, or a high up muckety duck, I can tell you this job was COMPLETELY screwed up. From beginning to end. Who puts up an unfinished and unsupported project over MOVING LANES OF TRAFFIC? It failed because IT WAS DESIGNED TO BE SUPPORTED, not span the entire width without a center structure and cantilevers.
Someone needs to go to prison for 2nd degree murder, maybe MANY someones.

Is a democrat-connected construction project in Miami in a democrat representative’s district getting funding under the Obola administration for a bridge designed and purchased from a minority-woman-owned design firm for a woman-minority-owned construction firm donating money to the democrat party in FL corrupt?

To be fair, I have no idea if FIGG Bridge Company, which designed the project, is minority-owned. I do believe the construction company IS, however.
Pretty much all of the people mentioned in the article are Republicans, and donate heavily to Republicans, and this is in a Republican’s Congressional district.
That used to be a captain obvious style joke, but now it has become a legitimate question.
During his own reelection bid last fall in heavily Democratic Miami-Dade, Gimenez announced that he would vote for Clinton and called on Trump to drop out of the race following the release of an audiotape that captured the GOP nominee talking about groping women.
Gimenez, a Republican, won the election in heavy Democrat Miami Dade by 100K votes.
