Now, imagine being a young, white, reasonably decent-looking, riding an old Sportster on that very corrider, and breaking down completely, somewhere around Jessup, MD.

Because that's what happened to me in 1993. I was coming home from Rolling Thunder with my late husband. Luckily, he was on a different bike(a big FLH, which I was incapable of riding so the HE could push the Sporty!), which he rode slowly beside me as I walked the Sporty down the ramp to repair shop. I had to leave the Sporty behind and ride "bad word meaning a female canine" all the way back to MA (a totally humiliating experience which I hadn't had to do since 1973) Then the crummy people at the repair shop closed the shop and took my bike with them. They held her for ransom ($3000.00) until three months later when some members of my riding club went down in a pick-up truck to MD to rescue the Sporty. I had to do quite a bit of "skip-tracing to find the guy, and the Sporty was in his backyard. To this day, I SHUDDER at the mere mention of Baltimore and its environs.
