(COLUMBUS COUNTY, N.C.) — A veteran state trooper in North Carolina was shot dead while making a traffic stop early Wednesday, authorities said.

The deadly confrontation unfolded when Kevin Conner, an 11-year veteran, stopped a pickup truck for speeding in Columbus County just after midnight, the North Carolina Department of Public Safety said.

The driver pulled onto the shoulder, and when Conner approached, the driver allegedly fired several shots, authorities said.

The suspected shooter then fled the scene and led police on a car chase, authorities said.

His car became stuck while trying to drive over a railroad crossing, authorities said, so he then fled on foot.

The suspect as found after an “extensive search” and taken into custody without incident, authorities said.

“The Highway Patrol family is mourning the loss of a hero,” State Highway Patrol commander Colonel Glenn McNeill Jr. said in a statement.

The department “will forever be changed by the tragic events,” he said. “We ask everyone to please keep Trooper Conner’s family and all who knew him in your thoughts and prayers.”

The suspect has not yet been identified, authorities said, adding that charges are pending.

A couple weeks ago there was an ambush of police officers in Florence, South Carolina, and now this in North Carolina.

All so tragic, and no doubt that the War on Cops is real.

Can he have a speedy trial and justice? Any jailer, medical personnel or cleaning crew are at risk of death when keeping a snake with venom close to them. I believe in Redemption. One sentence is justice; the other is grace.

I’m a YUGE LIVE PD fan. I think of this scenario every time I watch an officer walk up to the window of a car he/she has stopped. Which is what patrol officers do, day in and day out, hundreds if not thousands of times during their careers.

Capital punishment is a legal penalty in the U.S. state of North Carolina.

Thank GOD!

Lawyers who deliberately delay trials should be found guilty of obstructing justice with a mandatory prison sentence and should be disbarred for life.

As Dean Martin said in ROUGH NIGHT IN JERICHO, “Lock him up. We’ll hang him tomorrow right after the trial.”

"WRAL-TV reported that Conner was credited with helping save lives after a 2011 fiery head-on crash in Columbus County. The station reported Conner used an extinguisher to put out flames and that he and another trooper provided first aid while waiting for paramedics."

The suspect as found after an “extensive search” and taken into custody without incident, authorities said.

How that should have read is "The suspect was found after an extensive search and succumbed to "too numerous to count" gunshots while resisting arrest(whether he did or not!)

Used to be if you killed a cop, you almost never made it to trial, at least not with out a long painful hospital stay.

"I’m a YUGE LIVE PD fan."

As are my spouse and I, along with "Cops", of which many episodes are 10-15 year-old reruns.

We have both noticed a BIG difference in the way law enforcement has changed over the years (post-Obama?)

15 years ago, LE barked instructions at perps, and if they didn't immediately comply they were face-first on the pavement.

On present-day "LIVE PD", they clearly take a much "kinder and gentler" approach.

I have to believe we can thank Obama, Ferguson, et. al. for this new enlightened approach.
