After receiving a direct challenge from President Donald Trump to prove her Native American ancestry by submitting to a DNA test, Senator Elizabeth Warren released her results Monday morning. As an enrolled member of the Diné (Navajo) Nation, I obviously have some thoughts on this development. As a geneticist-bioethicist, I have even more. Whether or not Warren has genetic ties to indigenous peoples, she is not Native American, and her public gambit could dangerously obscure that distinction.

Elizabeth Warren is not only a total narcissist, she is tone-deaf as well. She should have dropped this touch of cachet YEARS ago, and never brought it up again.

Elevating this story into the headlines right now, before the mid-term elections, only manages to remind people of the duplicitous nature of the Democrats, the “Me-me-me” chant that is supposed to make us love them and return them to office. NOT attractive.

If you must prove genetic ancestry and can’t, the same logic transfers to gender. If the genes put the lie to what you want, you must accept what the genes say. If the genes are XY, you can’t claim XX
