Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on Wednesday defended special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation as "appropriate and independent" as President Trump continues to attack the probe as a "witch hunt."
Rosenstein made the remarks during an interview with the Wall Street Journal, just weeks after reports emerged that he was going to leave his post at the Justice Department. He ultimately stayed.
Mueller told the Journal that Mueller's probe has already revealed wide-ranging efforts by Russia to sow discord and meddle in the 2016 presidential election.
“I committed I would ensure the investigation was appropriate and independent and reached the right result, whatever it may be,” Rosenstein said. “I believe I have been faithful to that.”
The president and GOP lawmakers have continued to escalate attacks on the probe, accusing investigators of bias against Trump.
“People are entitled to be frustrated, I can accept that,” Rosenstein told the Journal. “But at the end of the day, the public will have confidence that the cases we brought were warranted by the evidence and that it was an appropriate use of resources.”
“I have a solemn responsibility to make sure that cases like that are pursued and prosecuted, and I’m pleased the president has been supportive of that,” he added.
Rosenstein during the interview declined to discuss the reports that he was either planning to resign from his position at the Justice Department or Trump was planning to fire him.
"The president knows that I am prepared to do this job as long as he wants me to do this job," he said. "You serve at the pleasure of the president, and there’s never been any ambiguity about that in my mind."
The deputy attorney general rarely sits down for interviews, even as the president has publicly attacked him and his role in Mueller's investigation.
He would not say when the probe is likely to be completed, the Journal reported.
Multiple GOP lawmakers have threatened to subpoena Rosenstein over a New York Times report that he once considered wearing a wire to record President Trump.
Rosenstein and the Justice Department have fiercely disputed the Times report, claiming the comments were made in jest.
Mueller is reportedly expected to present findings related to key aspects of his investigation after this November's midterm elections, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday.
It’s comforting to know the coup is still in full swing. When all this goes to sh!t, Jeff Sessions needs to be brought to justice.
Don’t know why I am finding this hard to believe. People with a bent, an inclination, a preconceived idea and they are looking for the facts to prove this don’t sit well with me.
Rosenstein needs to go down with the rest of the swamp.
This guy needs to be fired. Make the press focus on this. If they don’t focus on this firing, it’s a win-win.

I believe this, like in poker, is a tell...
This tells me he has nothing beyond what they have already prosecuted. Now he is moving to the phase of justifying what they have done..

The coup might take a big hit if only Trump would release the FISA docs like he promised to do. Instead he allowed Rosenstein to countermand his “immediate declassification” order and now the FISA docs are buried by Horowitz who will never permit them to see the light of day before the elections, if ever.
Sometimes you wonder who works for who.
That was the plan all along. Stall until the midterms.
These swamp-rats all need to be brought to justice or we don’t have any justice anymore. That includes Rosenstein.
Trump allowed Rosenstein to persuade him to NOT release the FISA docs. So Rod gets what he wants but the American people don’t. Frequently it appears that Rosenstein has leverage over Trump.
Trump could get rid of Rosenstein tomorrow morning by simply releasing the FISA docs. That alone would provide a basis for firing him. But he hasn’t. In point of fact, he passed the FISA docs off to Horowitz who has buried them. Its hard not to conclude that Trump seems to be OK with that.
I wouldn’t be a bit surprised to see Rosenstein hang around well after the elections. I get the sense that he’s holding some pretty good cards that have enabled him to keep his job despite a mountain of reasons to fire him.
I think it may be that Trump is maintaining leverage and control over Rosenstein by not releasing the FISA docs. The release nukes everyone involved and expends that ammo. Not releasing it keeps a lid on while we run up to the election. It’s the biggest weapon in the quiver, it’s use becomes highly strategic...and people act differently if they trying (hoping) to avoid seeing it used against them.
They may be released at some point, but that point is probably going to be when the majorities are assured and the release will not create extreme disruption in a functioning majority.

Not me. I had no illusions of what Trump was facing when he was first elected. One man...ONE man against a 4 trillion dollar corrupt stasi state, both parties, corrupt courts and the fakestream media. That makes him President in name only.
The fact that he’s got as much done in 2 years as he has, is a testament to his will power.
