Iowa health officials confirmed Wednesday a second case of a rare condition that afflicts the nervous system, particularly the spinal cord.

The condition is called acute flaccid myelitis, or AFM, which attacks the nervous system and can lead to arm or leg weakness and loss of muscle reflexes. It has received increased attention in recent weeks.

Officials with the Iowa Department of Public Health said they are following the condition very closely and heeding warnings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Well, looks like this isn't quite so rare now. A virus is mentioned as a possible cause, because it does seem to be infectious, but they really can't determine a cause. I wonder if there is a connection between this illness and the invasion of 3rd world people. That would be kept quiet, if true. Praying that doctors and researchers can figure this out soon and find a way to prevent and treat it.

Three children are in the hospital in Pittsburgh with this right now. One is the daughter of a local high school football coach.

Could this be bioterrorism?

I stream a NYC station on my phone and their news report yesterday said that there are 3 cases in New York and 2 in Connecticut.

My first questions: Was the 3-year old in daycare? If so, with any immigrants? Does a parent work with immigrants?

“Could this be bioterrorism?”

Oh, heavens, what a thought! So far they have not been able to identify a pathogen, though. That would be some sophisticated creation if undetectable.

Could this be bioterrorism?

Seems unlikely.A much more plausible explanation involves carriers from Central/South America or central Africa...both parts of the world that are giant petri dishes of the nastiest, most exotic viruses imaginable.

No, doesn’t fit the bill.

For one, hasn’t been nearly as heavy in scope and scale as a deliberate attempt would be.

Second, muzzies like to blow things up, have things happen in broad daylight, so this is verrrryyy sloooowww to show off terrorist skill, especially show-boaters like muzzies.

Dr Michael Savage was talking yesterday about one of his early book that correlated immigrants from turd countries with outbreaks of serious infectious diseases.

It was his only book that publishers were afraid off and refused to publish it.

Maybe he can self-publish it as an e-book.

Or brought over the border by illegals. We are in the Bedford school district- one district north of the Clintons in Chappaqua. Over the past three years we’ve had six diagnosed cases of whooping cough in the district- all illegals.

“Was the 3-year old in daycare? If so, with any immigrants? Does a parent work with immigrants?”

And those are absolutely non-xenophobic questions to ask.

We have to rule out the possibility of this illness being brought in by immigrants. To not ponder or research that possibility is public health safety at its worst.

Isn’t it amazing how the increase in ‘odd’, ‘rare’, and ‘long ago’ diseases are directly proportional to the increase of illegal immigrants.

My first thought was what vaccines were common to all of them. Perhaps the flu shot?

I caught an offshoot of this disease in 1984. Transverse myelitis hit me at age 19. I had no symptoms whatsoever, just started hurting in my lower back and it felt like fire spreading down my legs. Within 15 mins. I was paralyzed from about the chest down. The doctors at the time suspected a virus was the culprit. They had no treatment other than steroids and PT and since I couldn’t really move anything for months there wasn’t a lot of PT. After a few weeks the paralysis went down below my waist but I spent two years learning to walk again and still have lingering issues, such as muscle weakness and balance totally shot, I walk with two canes and have noticed arthritis is really kicking in the last couple of years.

I was eligible for social security disability having worked several quarters before getting sick and could have stayed on it all my life but I wanted more so I went back to college and got a degree, got married and had three kids and have worked every since graduating. But since I hit 50 I have noticed I this thing is really starting to kick my butt physically. If I can make it to 60 I will probably retire on disability at that point, kids out of college and house paid for. I feel for these kids getting this and hope they can isolate this virus and make a vaccine.

Bioterrorism is a real threat, but it’s extremely difficult to weaponize a virus. Hope I never see the day.
