Not sure what I would do. If my wife was with me I would think twice. If I was by myself I would evaluate the confrontation and then take action. I don’t think these fools really know that what they are doing is having the opposite affect of what they intend it to.

Yes. Yours is the correct takeaway, as opposed to hyperventilation about a "mob", and so on. This easily could have been a lone, perhaps suicidal killer.
I am sure that McConnell & Chao just want to have at least at times a "normal", non-celebrity life, and not have a phalanx of armed guards "cocooning" them if they just want to grab a bite to eat at a local restaurant. But at least a couple Secret Service agents in plainclothes, nearby, would seem to be an acceptable compromise.
An announcement of unspecified random security measures might also be helpful.
Of course, if you want maximum deterrence, have the security show up as Narn warriors. Or, Klingons in a pinch.
I have been saying the same thing for months. McConnell is the leader of the US Senate. Why can’t he bring legalization for all members of Congress to have Federal. Marshals or Secret a Service protection? The cost would be tiny as compared to say how much free money we give to Planned Butcherhood every year.
