A problem in institutional churches is that they have trouble rising to the level of Christliness. Their teaching descends into cold orthodoxy and religious rite. As a result, societies are not elevated, but wallow in spiritual squalor because “oh, we did what we had to at the church.” Nope. Christianity needs to be a 24/7 thing. You don’t clock in and clock out with the Lord.

If Africans want to keep reproducing like bunny rabbits, this is fine with me. But don’t demand that Europe and the US to take in your millions and billions of excess people.

FACT! - England is more densely populated than many African nations. Wikipedia stats.

England is officially Europe’s most densely packed major ...

England has become the most overcrowded major country in Europe. Population growth is so rapid that four times as many people will soon be crammed in as France and twice as many as Germany. England has overtaken the Netherlands to become second only to tiny Malta as the most densely populated nation in the EU.

“African overpopulation is indeed a significant threat literally to the entire planet, including the environment.”

The African continent could support Africa and the world quite comfortably. Your threat is just anther disproved Leftist theory. We were all supposed to starve years ago, without any food or oil, and in an ice age! Crawl back into your cave with your scarce resources and cuddle up with your father Malthus.

Resources have never been the problem. It’s corruption, corruption, corruption, disease and violence. Africa’s problems have now been fortified with socialism, Islamic terrorism and Western money. Don’t worry, those evil black and brown people have been killing themselves quite well, and the elite will succeed in depopulating not only Africa, but the world!

Your globalist, elitist betters appreciate your support. The New Era awaits as soon as we rid ourselves of these useless eaters! Sig Bill.

Again, easy to say when you are an American. Not so easy when one is in a rural village in Uganda, Cambodia or Uruguay, with six mouths to feed and another on the way.

It is easy being a ‘garbage man’ when one is from a rich Western country where even those in ghettos have automobiles, iPhones and $600 sneakers.

It’s another thing when Marasmus, Kwashiorkor and other dietary based diseases are a real killer (and by dietary based I don’t mean cholesterol related issues, but rather lack of food), where proper education is out of reach, and incomes may as well be non-existent.

This is why I have no problem in America, Western Europe and Japan raising their (non-immigrant) birth rates. Absolutely no problem with that, and in fact I feel it should be encouraged.

But it is patently ludicrous for people in wealthy countries to tell the poor to have more kids. Ridiculous!

Ezra Klein: the Constitution “was written more than 100 years ago.”

I couldn’t agree more. That’s why I left the Catholic church for good in 2000. Yet the previous popes were holy men, some of them, even if they could not see what we see.

The whole point of the article was that having kids benefits the poor family socially rather than economically.

There are better ways to be rich in this world....and I find it a little disturbing that FReepers are so quick to adopt the Margaret Sanger ethic.

We don't have a lot of money. My wife homeschools our 5 kids and we depend solely on my income. And yet I feel a hundred times wealthier than peers who have giant houses full of nobody. I am watching the older generations now either delighting in a devoted mess of grandchildren or depressed and alone in the midst of chosen sterility. So I think this article is absolutely right....and even in a tough situation like in Africa where infant mortality is so high I wouldn't *dream* of telling anyone they would be better off not having kids in the first place.

Birth control has made Americans stupid. STUPID. We've had 5 miscarriages, and every single one has increased our compassion and family cohesion. We never had a child die, but we have known families that have, and they would never say they would have been better off not having the child in the first place. We are all here on this earth to die, lest you forget.

And no one is *telling* Africans to have more kids. They *want* more kids.

People Are Wealth

No.

SKILLED, SMART people create wealth.

Unskilled, unintelligent who demand to be taken care of by the rest of us, are what create poverty.

What the world needs is for the self-supporting to have more kids, and the non-self-supporting to stop.

Technically, Ezra was right. I could also say the constitution was written more than 50 years ago and I would be correct :)

I think it’s cultural. And that’s why I believe that Christianity has been the greatest force for good in Africa. It offers a philosophical ‘place to stand’ that is the most progressive (in the true sense of the word) that we’ve developed.

The most intelligent people can’t get ahead if they’re struggling within a backward paradigm that they can’t see beyond.

The world at large would neither be better or worse off. But Africa itself WOULD. Between all the Western powers abandoning colonialism and running home crying to their mommies, awful patient-to-doctor ratios, perpetual tribal warfare and the simple fact that so many people live where food doesn’t grow...a smaller population would at least be a big help.

Now I’ll be the first to say it wouldn’t instantly solve every problem. But when Mr and Mrs. Ungabunga have 8 children in the house with adequate nutrition for half that number IN A GOOD HARVEST YEAR, it is only a matter of WHEN famine is going to clobber you hard.
