President Trump to pull U.S. out of INF Nuclear Treaty with Russia
BBC ^ | 21 Oct 2018

Speaking to reporters, Mr Trump said Russia had "violated" the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty.

The US would not let Russia "go out and do weapons while we're not allowed to", Mr Trump said. "I don't know why President Obama didn't negotiate or pull out," the president said after a campaign rally in Nevada. "They've been violating it for many years."

National Security Adviser John Bolton is expected to tell the Russians of the withdrawal during talks in Moscow later this week.

Yep, our enemies know congress and the press will force us to follow the treaties, and none will hold them accountable, so they’re happy to sign anything.

Is a treaty with the old Soviet Union still valid?

The Russians have been violating this treaty for how many years now? Of course Obuttboy did nothing (his whole ‘residency was a big nothing), but did these violations start when Senor Bush was el Presidente?

Sigh.

Oh well, nothing to see here. Just the Russians being Russians.

Treaty was just as valid as the ABM treaty we pulled out of under Bush 43. We are pulling out because the Russians have deployed intermediate nukes and Bush and Obama protested and did nothing in response.

If I were Trump I would bring up a Pershing like nuke being deployed in Poland and set it in motion and ask Putin if he wants to follow the INF treaty or not.

I would just assume that the Russians would not follow any treaty, and any pretended compliance would only last until the next Democrat administration, so we might as well scrap the treaty, do a bunch of testing, and build and deploy a bunch more nukes.

Trump recognizes that if we are the only one honoring such an agreement, it handicaps us. Dropping out sends a message....we can afford another cold war (as if the original ever really ended), how about you?

Of course the US stationed antiballistic missiles in Romania almost two decades ago in violation of this treaty. We are working on putting them in Poland, too, also a would-be violation.

“Has anything changed?”

Yep. The entity we signed this treaty with no longer exists. Therefore the treaty no longer exists.

Pretty simple, really.

Yeah, but Trump colluded with them anyway. And this is the proof! (logic and narrative are not friends).

No real need. Current cruise missile technology is often a better if slower answer - as the Russians have been paying considerable attention and money to ABM defense.

The AGM-158B JASSM-ER already has a powered range of over 570 miles with a 1000lb payload; it’s a stealthy subsonic cruise missile that’s already in service. As of September 2018, Lockheed has been contracted to build a JASSM-XR - an “extreme range” version that can carry a 2000lb warhead out to 1200 miles.

The Pershing II could only throw about 1000lbs out to about 1100 miles and it was blindingly obvious when you launched one. Short flight time could be an advantage, but in a first strike all that a Pershing does before it gets to its destination is give the other guy notice and let him get off return fire.

Hate to tell you, but according to international law and treaties that both the US and Russia have signed, Russia *is* the legal successor state to the USSR *and* the Russian Empire and all treaties from either of the prior states is actually still supposed to be binding on Russia and any other party.

So, no. From a practical standpoint nothing has changed there except the name of the other signatory.
