Partway through the discussion, Kelly pondered what exactly is so bad about white people wearing blackface. The studio audience did not react negatively in real time. But after the segment, Twitter sure did.

One of my boys is painstakingly making a Star Wars Storm Trooper costume. An incredible effort for an 11 year old, one he is pulling off spectacularly. The other opted for a ghillie suite.
At a local Halloween store we saw people buy President Trump faces. Is it racist for a black or Hispanic person to wear one? Probably dangerous to wear one in some neighborhoods just as it might be to dress in Islamic and Arab attire. Dress as an American cowboy? Snowhite? A princess? Seems even the most tame costume will offend somebody.
What is acceptable, PC, not PC and acceptable?

Ted Danson did it after making the unfortunate decision to date Whoopi. I had no problem with it then and none now. Now, dating Whoopi Goldberg? Different story entirely.
Just call it “people of color” face and you won’t have any problems.

Tropic Thunder has Robert Downey Jr playing g a black dude. People laughed. So it’s who does it and in what context that matters. But mostly party affiliation.
It’s an interesting question. There’s nothing really inherently offensive about it, but I gather that in the Jim Crow days, comedians would don blackface in order to make fun of black people. Assuming that’s true (as opposed to, maybe it was good-natured humor), how far into the rear view mirror does that need to get before it’s OK again?
The left adored him after she trashed Trump during the debate..now the left has decided to spit her out. Honestly what is the big deal about wearing blackface as a Halloween costume. Trump masks, Clinton masks, heck Ive seen Obama masks, so what its freakin HALLOWEEN
But what about the old days when we didn’t get so picky about little things? Little, silly things, like “what halloween costume is appropriate.”
Just to be safe: walking around this year under a large cardboard box (no printing whatsoever), pretending to be a chip off the old block.
Blackface had its origins in minstrel shows, on southern show boats, etc when blacks could not be integrated into white casts. This is illustrated wonderfully in the original sound film of Show Boat in which Irene Dunne plays the banjo in blackface. She’s very funny. Even Paul Robson laughs at her antics. “Can that girl shuffle!”
How come minstrel shows weren’t fun? I have books on the subject and they were quite entertaining. Distinctly un-pc today but they were very popular in their time. I doubt they’ll come back into fashion although a good friend of mine (an actor “of color”) had a show about it and did an amazing cake walk. This was in the 1980s when we weren’t so very sensitive.
She looks nice, but she also looks like she could ride a Clydesdale.
