Full title: ‘Oh No, Baby, What is You Doing?’: Megyn Kelly Catches Hell for Asking What’s Wrong with Black Face on Halloween

On Tuesday, Megyn Kelly did a segment about the “crackdown” on Halloween costumes by political correctness, along with former First Daughter and NBC correspondent Jenna Bush Hager, producer and red carpet fashion staple Melissa Rivers, and MSNBC correspondent Jacob Soboroff. Partway through the discussion, Kelly pondered what exactly is so bad about white people wearing blackface. The studio audience did not react negatively in real time. But after the segment, Twitter sure did.

Yes, Kelly defended dressing up in blackface. Twitter is apparently freaked out. The tweets and comments in the Mediaite post are quite good. Part of me is asking if Kelly is trying to get MSNBC to fire her, but I also think this is a great topic. What is acceptable Halloween costume?

One of my boys is painstakingly making a Star Wars Storm Trooper costume. An incredible effort for an 11 year old, one he is pulling off spectacularly. The other opted for a ghillie suite.

At a local Halloween store we saw people buy President Trump faces. Is it racist for a black or Hispanic person to wear one? Probably dangerous to wear one in some neighborhoods just as it might be to dress in Islamic and Arab attire. Dress as an American cowboy? Snowhite? A princess? Seems even the most tame costume will offend somebody.

What is acceptable, PC, not PC and acceptable?

“What is acceptable, PC, not PC and acceptable?”

I’m not sure.

Walk around your neighborhood wearing blackface, go to work in blackface, go to church in blackface.

How about the old days when we didn’t make such a fuss about every little thing?

Ted Danson did it after making the unfortunate decision to date Whoopi. I had no problem with it then and none now. Now, dating Whoopi Goldberg? Different story entirely.

Just call it “people of color” face and you won’t have any problems.

Anything that offends the Dem voting groups is racist sexist homophobic.

Insulting Republican voters isn’t.

Got it?

Tropic Thunder has Robert Downey Jr playing g a black dude. People laughed. So it’s who does it and in what context that matters. But mostly party affiliation.

It’s an interesting question. There’s nothing really inherently offensive about it, but I gather that in the Jim Crow days, comedians would don blackface in order to make fun of black people. Assuming that’s true (as opposed to, maybe it was good-natured humor), how far into the rear view mirror does that need to get before it’s OK again?

But what about the old days when we didn’t get so picky about little things? Little, silly things, like “what halloween costume is appropriate.”

Just to be safe: walking around this year under a large cardboard box (no printing whatsoever), pretending to be a chip off the old block.

Man, the White Christmas Minstrel Number said it all. They were saying, "Hey, remember all those minstrel shows? They were fun!" No they weren't fun, they were demeaning and we don't want them any more.

Blackface in and of itself is not the problem - it's the fact that minstrel shows existed in the past.

Blackface had its origins in minstrel shows, on southern show boats, etc when blacks could not be integrated into white casts. This is illustrated wonderfully in the original sound film of Show Boat in which Irene Dunne plays the banjo in blackface. She’s very funny. Even Paul Robson laughs at her antics. “Can that girl shuffle!”

How come minstrel shows weren’t fun? I have books on the subject and they were quite entertaining. Distinctly un-pc today but they were very popular in their time. I doubt they’ll come back into fashion although a good friend of mine (an actor “of color”) had a show about it and did an amazing cake walk. This was in the 1980s when we weren’t so very sensitive.

She looks nice, but she also looks like she could ride a Clydesdale.
