An official says the single-engine plane that crashed on a Southern California freeway is a North American AT-6 that belonged to a squadron of vintage aircraft.

Condor Squadron President Chris Rushing says the pilot was unhurt and managed to land the plane on U.S. 101 on Tuesday without hitting any cars.

Why would you think it was shot down?

I was gonna say that the reason the plane didn’t crash is that the cars were stuck end to end in a massive traffic jam and he was able to ride over the tops of all of them.

Good that he didn’t hit any cars and the pilot survived too.

“Rushing says the plane is painted with World War II-era German air force markings.”

Of course not. The ME-109 had an inline engine, not a radial engine. This is an AT-6, an American Trainer painted to resemble a Luftwaffe aircraft. But, it would be pretending to be a FW190, not a ME-109.

No. It is an American AT-6 trainer, painted to look like a German FW-190 fighter.

Shot down?

Possibly...right before it flew through the dimensional portal.

You’re right - it’s been a long time since I played with planes ...

Shot down?

...

Considering the photograph at the link, that’s a funny comment.

The German military still uses that cross symbol. How long until it’s changed to a crescent?

You get the aircraft identification prize for the night. Were you, by chance, the spotter for the flak unit that nailed that one?

Yes, praise be to God that the pilot is alive and well. What a miracle!

My dad had one of those same T6 planes painted with World War II-era German air force markings before he passed away. I wonder if that was the same squadron he was part of as well. I remember them as the California Condors.

At his passing I made a montage of his photos and a section was on his planes and his time with the Condors. The squadron at his memorial service liked it so much they asked me for a copy. I wonder if it is that same group. If that is the same squadron, those folks are wonderful folks.

My brother would know since my dad always took him flying with him so he was more familiar with the planes and the group. I would have gone all the time too, but my mom would not allow it. I do remember having wonderful kid fun just playing around the airport where my dad kept his plane before it was painted like this.
