The president of Poland's ruling party has said the country will push ahead with plans to cut a canal through a split of land near the Russian border saying "it is time show the Russians the days they dictated to us are over".
Poland wants to dig the canal through a narrow strip of land that blocks the Vistula Lagoon on the north-east coast from the Baltic Sea. At present Polish ships leaving the lagoon from the port of Elblag have to pass through Russian waters to get to the open sea.
Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the leader of Law and Justice, the governing party, and a man regarded as the most powerful figure in Polish politics, said the necessity to sever the last vestiges of Russian influence over Poland means the canal has to be built.
It is important for Polands status, he said in a radio interview. In the end Poland needs to shed the last traces of being a dependent state. We need to show that that times Russia dictated what we could or not do on our territory are over.

Kind of amusing that Russia wrote EU complaining about possible ecological damage to the Vistula Lagoon. When have such ecological concerns been a bother to Russia?
[When have such ecological concerns been a bother to Russia?]
Ping in memory of another FReeper.
When have such ecological concerns been a bother to Russia?
They are just like any other corrupt entity with ecological concerns, when it’s to their advantage.
Thats a no brainer!!
When the bureaucrats running the EU started wringing their hands about ecological concerns.
When you look at it, from a larger picture I assume this issue is more of graft than anything else. Poland has lots of access to the see. The straight which blocks the see is a resort area much like Door County or Cape Cod. I assume that manufactures in Elblog want to repurpose land in order to help the flow to factories there. While the resorts are very happy to have the ships stay clear of their beeches.
This is just a local issue that does not have to do with anyone outside the area. Gdansk is probably very happy if the canal never gets built.
I wish we could transfer all the foreign aid from countries that hate us to our great friend Poland
I bet the bridge over the canal will cost more than the canal itself.
Hard to believe the Poles didn’t see this as necessary long ago. Quit yer cryin and dig the ditch.
I think I’ll spend next summer there.
I tell you, the Poles & Hungarians are really getting my attention about how to run a country. They brook no nonsense.
Chernobyl is actually in the Ukraine, land of the blameless ex-commies.
True - at that time it was still one of their areas, no? 1986 if I recall.
Im glad you posted that map. The story wasnt making sense at first because for some reason I was thinking way over by Puck.
My opinion is all on the side of Poland.
I just returned from a short trip to Poland and was amazed at the beauty of the country and how well it has been modernized after WWII and 44 years under the yoke of Soviet Communism. They have a lot to be proud of. It must have taken a lot of hard work to rebuild Poland nto a modern 21st century republic.
So, to Poland - go for it!!!
