Fox News ^ | October 26th, 2018 | Fox News AP story

A phone call to a wrong number in Nebraska delivered just what a man in pain needed: a ride to a hospital...Her brother is a veteran living on disability and didn't have Department of Veterans Affairs' approval to call an ambulance, she said. He also couldn't afford a taxi to a hospital, she said...It took Nagengast a little while to realize she hadn't reached her brother's social worker... Voss called delivery driver Zach Hillmer, who picked up Holeman and drove him to a hospital emergency room. Hillmer, a U.S. Navy veteran, said it was a privilege to help a fellow military man.

Didn’t have permission to call an ambulance? What?

Cool story.

“Here’s a bucket of water and a sandwich.”

“But we’re the fire department. Why didn’t you call us first?”

We did!”

“Didn’t have permission to call an ambulance? What?”

I take it that meant the cost wouldn’t be covered under his VA healthcare. (I assume.)

Well I guess I’m privileged then. My ambulance took me to a first-class hospital where they amputated my leg, then to a decent nursing home for rehabilitation for months and it cost me exactly nothing.

“Didn’t have permission to call an ambulance? What?”

It’s the VA.

You know the place that gives veterans like us a second chance to die for our country.

If you have a chance go to RangerUp and search for The Damn Few presents The Wizard of VA.

It does happen. 15yrs ago I was taken by ambulance to the local ER for a cardiac problem. The ER doc called the VA hospital 200 miles away and they admitted me over the phone. The ER doc told them I needed to be transported right away, but the VA said no transportation is authorized, I had to find my own way. Needless to say the ER Dr was totally horrified. They gave me an oxygen tank and some nitro in case the pain got worse. Luckily I was able to get one of my son in laws to do the driving for 4 hours to get me there in the middle of the night.

So much can be done to make sense of what the government has done to the VA. I hope Director Robert Wilkie has seen enough of the inside to make real changes.

My frustrations with the bureaucracy could fill a book. But once I get into our facility. I have found the people working there to be really great.

“didn’t have Department of Veterans Affairs’ approval to call an ambulance”

I hope PDJT hears this story, along with similar ones. This is unacceptable.

Jimmie John’s has the best sandwiches. Love the basic ham sandwich. Forgot what it’s called.

“Well I guess I’m privileged then.”

Not being a vet, I’m clueless about how the VA healthcare system handles such things. If it’s anything like civilian healthcare, insurance often does not cover everything.
Your case sounds like a pretty extreme situation - maybe with this guy his situation wasn’t deemed “ambulance transport-worthy”, I dunno. Which might have been the reasoning since he did get to the VA hospital in a JJ sandwich delivery car in the end. That would be my guess, at any rate.

Yes, they are yummy. I wish, though, that they still had sprouts. They made my sandwiches.

They said that there had been a health problem with them so they discontinued them. No veggie has had more problems that I know of than lettuce and they still have lettuce. Maybe it’s just an excuse to get rid of sprouts because they are a little more expensive and take a little extra care. I think, though, that the fresh sprouts really set their yummy sandwiches apart and were worth the extra attention. The sandwiches, though really good, just aren’t as exceptional without those sprouts!
