Eurozone failures mean Iceland should stay out of the EU, its prime minister told EU Observer. She would also quit NATO if she had her say.
“I don’t think we should enter the EU right now. I don’t think there is any reason to apply,” Katrin Jakobsdottir said in an interview with this website, as Iceland’s new government prepared to celebrate its first anniversary in power.
“Personally, I’m critical towards the economic policies of the EU — the creation of the eurozone without any real centralized policies on taxes or fiscal policies,” she said. “The European Central Bank has become really powerful without being very democratic. The economic policies of the EU have been really distant from people in the eurozone, and they’ve created divisions that need not be there,” she added.
Iceland applied to join the EU in 2009, but abandoned the process in 2015. It has remained a member of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and the European Economic Area (EEA), two free-trade clubs, instead.
The North Atlantic country, with a tiny population of just 340,000 people, is also a member of NATO, the world’s largest military alliance. […]

US troops kept Iceland free from German occupation in World War II. Iceland also became a founding member of NATO in 1949, but the US quit its permanent base there in 2006. …

EU does not have strong and centralized taxation and fiscal policy - but the ECB is too powerful and not democratic enough (??)

Doublethink remains the order of the day; the “Left-Greens” would not be any different.
Iceland knows that it’s likely the EU’s first moves would be to start dumping unvetted, unwanted refugees there.
Iceland could literally lose it’s identity overnight.
Since Poland and Hungary won’t take any, and Italy is plainly saying that they don’t want any more.
Iceland may want to stay in NATO. Putin may want to test his limits at sometime.
Norway is also in the EFTA and EEA, but they are quite Islamized in many urban areas, particularly Oslo. Iceland at least has the advantage of relative geographical isolation, and it would be up to Iceland’s government whether to go the route that these European countries have gone whether a full member of the EU and Eurozone or not.

Good for Iceland. It is a better strategy to allow the current government in power to define alliances on a bilateral, ongoing basis and not be bogged down with binding multinational entanglements. If they were really smart they would become a nuclear power, enact strict banking secrecy laws and become the Swizerland of the North Atlantic. They would become rich as hell.

Also, the EU would begin to strip away their ownership of their fishing grounds in the North Atlantic which is their primary means of survival.

So just how to they expect to be protected? This is serious cognizant dissonance in my view. But they should stay as far away from the EU as they can, because they’d become a pawn for Germany and France if they joined up.
Wasn’t Iceland bankrupt?
A bigger cognitive dissonance is that Iceland is on the verge of being invaded by someone.
Perversely enough, both statements are true. Perhaps the whole arrangement itself is too stupid to describe, without sounding stupid.
