It is as legal as using the US NAVY to patrol US Territorial Waters.

The US Army once maintained a system of Coastal Artillery batteries. Armies defend borders. They’re not just for power projection. Duh.

IMO, if we don’t use the military to stop them at the border, the population will use their private weapons to stop them as they scatter.
