Addressing a commemoration event at the Rákoskeresztúr Cemetery, where victims of the Soviet retaliation after the revolution are buried in unmarked graves, Justice Minister László Trócsányi said November 4 was “a national day of mourning but also a day of progress”. The heroes and martyrs of 1956 must be remembered and thought of with gratitude, the minister said in the cemetery’s national park of mourning.
“1956 spoke to the conscience of Europe and the world,” Trócsányi said. “Nothing has moved the conscience of the free world as the Hungarian revolution.”
“October 23, 1956 was borne out of hope, and this is what was killed on November 4,” the minister said.
During this period, Hungarians lived in greater fear and hopelessness than in 1945, he said. On October 23, the “nightmare” came true and many Hungarians were forced into hiding or had to flee, Trócsányi added. “An entire generation disappeared, among them many talented people.”
Finance Minister Mihály Varga also marked the national day of mourning at a commemoration event in Budapest’s second district...
“We must believe in the Hungarian nation and look towards the tasks of the future with a healthy self-confidence,” he said. “This is the self-confidence that those who believe we shouldn’t make our own decisions want to tear down.”
“For us, Hungarians and Hungary’s interests come first,” Varga said. “This is why we protect our national independence and the free and safe lives of those who live here.”

My ex wife and her parents were Hungarian emigres to the US. They a restaurant; the communists slowly stripped them of everything they owned. They had a cow. Mama was put in jail for - get this - watering the milk.
When Nagymama (grandma) was on her deathbed in Budapest, Papa went back for a visit. He was held at the border by the state’s police and never got to see her. The parents (now both deceased) became two of the proudest Americans I ever met.
The Bridge at Andau by Robert Mitchum about this is one of my favorite books.

I remember some of the newsreel coverage on TV.
The Hungarians were fighting tanks with rifles and Molotov cocktails, some were on rooftops trying to take out tanks with them.
There were reform Communists who wanted to keep Hungary neutral.
Soviets weren’t prepared to accept an Austrian solution.
I just read Sebastian Gorka’s most recent book, and it’s great. It really resonated with me. Hearing about how his father was taken by the authorities after the 1956 Hungarian revolts crushed, and he was tortured in prison...
It was amazing, the story. His father was part of a group of activists who wanted to release information about what was going on in Hungary to the world, and they found the western conduit who would help them.
Unfortunately for them, the “western conduitt“ happened to be A member of the Philby spy group, and he strung the group of students along until he knew exactly who all of them are, then released the information to the communist authorities who went out and arrested all of them.
Some boys came here and went to Catholic schools. My mom told me they didn't behave very well and lit their cigarettes and smoked in school. lol.
I'll take a look at your video. Saw some beautiful pictures of Christmas in Budapest, in a now generation. All lit up, a market, awesome.
They get a measure of limited freedom after 1956. Kadar wasn’t seeking revenge and he even introduced a market economy that raised living standards.
I’m sure he would have liked to do more but Soviet paranoia about 1956 precluded it.
I hope they can hold out against the EU. Are still freedom fighters in a sense. No culture is homogenuous in Europe, but they want to preserve what they have and suffered for.
