The jury is out on whether Mitt Romney, the nearly certain winner in the Senate race in Utah, will be a powerful voice challenging President Trump or whether he will, as so many other Republicans have, crumble. However, his essay this week in defense of a free press was as excellent start.

Romney should be credited with responsibly defending the First Amendment. It is good practice for the oath he’ll take to uphold the Constitution (including all the amendments) before entering the Senate. Republicans who think the media really is the enemy of the people and/or support Trump’s assaults on the First Amendment have no business holding public office.
For reminding conservatives that the press is an essential institution, we can say, well done, Mr. Romney.

it’s so ludicrous. the first amendment applies to people also, who have a right to free speech. it doesn’t protect the press from criticism (and his criticism is entirely warranted).
Romney’s distinguished cuz he’s a loser.
Tariffs will destroy the economy. Tariffs get enacted, 100K manufacturing jobs. Suddenly, “WE” created jobs. These people all suck and lead from behind. That’s what Trump criticizers all do. Complain and then take credit.
Free Press to the media means if you question the veracity of the news you are an enemy of the 1st amendment.

I used to live in Mass. I voted for Romney for Senate. I voted for Romney for Governor. I voted for Romney for President. And then, in 2016 Romney convinced me to walk away from the GOP and I crawled over broken glass to vote for Trump (actually had the flu but voted anyway).
Romney won’t be a powerful voice - he already is disliked by many in the party nationally. When he tries doing the maverick thing the only support he will get is from from the left which will further erode any support he has.
The media must’ve gotten the narrative right about this traceling turd in 2012.
