Broken ballot scanners lead to long lines in NYC

Several polling sites across New York City have reported broken ballot scanners, leading to long lines, the Associated Press reports.

High turnout at one polling place led to a line twisting around a junior high school gym on Manhattan's Upper West Side, according to the AP.

Two of the roughly six scanners in the facility weren't working, poll workers told waiting voters.

Most of the scanners at two Brooklyn polling sites were also malfunctioning, the news outlet reported.

One voter told the AP that half the scanners were broken down at a polling sight in Crown Heights. She added that she waited two hours to vote, during which all of the polling place's machines broke forcing her to drop her ballot in an "emergency ballot box."

A number of polling places across the U.S. reported technical delays on Tuesday.

Precincts in Georgia reportedly suffered technical delays as voters headed to the polls for the midterm elections.

Officials said the precincts were experiencing difficulties with the system that produces access cards for the state’s electronic polling system.

In one North Carolina county, high humidity and ballot sized caused issues for machines.

Democrats are hoping to pick up 23 seats to flip the lower chamber in Tuesday's midterm elections. Most political handicappers give them a good chance of doing so.

Republicans, meanwhile, are expected to maintain control of the Senate.

Why do voting machine failures usually take place in Democratic strongholds?

ABC Radio was reporting problems involved 'humidity on the palm of peoples' hands'.

PART of our staten Island district is in Brooklyn.

And the area still votes R.

Hope it wasn’t those machines.

R for the house in this district is Always a given.

We shall see by tonight.

Because, like everything else, democrats are bad at rigging voting booths.

Actually kind of makes sense that if people get wet in the rain, then come in and grip their ballots, the ballots could get soggy from the water. I would have thought this had been encountered and addressed years ago, however.

We use to have booths where you would pull the lever. They never broke down. So of course NY got rid of them for these crappy computer scanners.

I wonder why more people don’t vote early when they have the opportunity? There are usually plenty of days to vote early, including on Saturday, but if you miss voting on Election Day because you must be at work and can’t wait for hours in a line, or because of an emergency or some other reason, that’s it for your chance to vote in a particular election.

Multiple locations in the Bronx and Queens that vote red are having troubles, as well.

The machines must have been clogged with preloaded votes.

I loved the level machines. It made you feel like you actually cast a ballot. Now it just goes into the machine and who knows what happens afterwards. I would hope someone verifies that the electronic tallies match the physical tallies. I may be hoping for a miracle though.

I never vote early. I do not even think there should be such a thing. Mail-in ballots for those overseas and military personnel, but the rest of us should vote on election day.

I wonder why people vote early.

What happens if news breaks a week or two before the election that changes everything?

If I'm going to be in town I'll vote on election day.

I don't see how early voting is convenient or actually going to vote at the poll on election day inconveniences anyone.

Why? So they can justify “late” returns, giving them the intel on just how many ballots they need to stuff to win.

Broken machines mean an excuse for cities to come in last with the results. Then they know exactly how many “lost” ballots they need to find to get the total needed.
