Troops from Camp Pendleton and Texas reported for their first day of work Thursday along the U.S.-Mexico border in San Diego... Much of the focus, at least initially, will be on strengthening the border barrier... So far, some 1,300 troops have been assigned to support operations along the California-Mexico border... The Defense Department said another 1,500 troops have been deployed in Arizona and 2,800 in Texas. The total number of troops is expected to grow to more than 7,000.

The Soldiers and Marines have gone to major Ports of Entry in South Texas (McAllen), Arizona (Nogales) and California (San Diego); and started improving the infrastructure to defend against a mob rush tactic. Chain link gates are being installed on pedestrian bridges, and concertina is being added to the bridge roofs, the tops of local barrier, and triple strand concertina is being emplaced through the open areas around the ports of entry. Also, the Military is developing tent city collection detention points nearby, which could house and support crowds of either detainees or US Government personnel.

"Sunglow City" just built on Davis Mothan Air Base In Tucson, to house deployed troops.

Let the progressive outrage begin!

About 2/3 down in the otherwise fine article...

"The military mobilization and Trump’s repeated characterization of the caravans as an “invasion” have been criticized as a way to further politicize the immigration issue."

They are going to head straight for the National Parks in both Ca and Az. Organ Pipe is the most vulnerable.

Great news. Is there some reason they are not being sent to New Mexico?

“Is there some reason they are not being sent to New Mexico?”

We’d just have to speculate, because DoD is not releasing the details of the deployments ahead of time.

I’d guess that they are prioritizing a few things:

- The highest volume Ports of Entry

- The most likely places the caravans will attempt

- Spreading the deployments along the border, to minimize the reaction distance, if/when the caravans change direction.

Ft. Bliss, Texas is a major installation sitting almost on the border in El Paso, just the other side of town from where the New Mexico border starts. They can probably cover that the 200 miles of New Mexico’s sector of the border, without deploying any troops from elsewhere.

"They are going to head straight for the National Parks in both Ca and Az. Organ Pipe is the most vulnerable."

It is a big problem, that there is so much wide open border to cover. Smaller groups can cross almost anywhere, but big groups of thousands need to spend most every night in a large town/small city. In the past, such caravans have crossed at the major urban ports of entry, or the Rio Grande Valley.

Organ Pipe Cactus NM has some pedestrian fence, but a lot of their border is just this Normandy barrier:

The Administration might also be strengthening the Big Ports of Entry, because they expect crowds to build up there, now that policy has been changed.

They now can only get amnesty hearings there - illegal crossers are barred from the amnesty process.

Yes, that’s right. I’m sure they got it covered. Maybe if they try crossing into NM on this news, they’ll be in for a surprise. :-)

And do what when they get there? No logistics in the middle of nowhere.

Organ Pipe is already a freeway for illegal entry. They get a lot of food and water help from sympathizers on this side. And because it is an “environmentally sensitive” area, vehicle traffic to curb their entry is also limited.

On foot, with a little food and water, it’s almost a wide open gate.
