The Germans have done it to themselves with their deference to elites, the disastrous Gaia worshiping global socialist ideology of those elites guided by their hypersmug arrogance and carried out by unelected bureaucrats.

This has been their attitude for decades. Any real dissent was deemed beyond the pale. Now it’s too late. The country has been irrevocably altered for the worse. Socialism was always doomed but it was at least a manageable decline before. Now there will be blood.

Germany is ahead of the US in self-destruction but the cause is the same: Unchecked Democracy. The original US Constitution was designed to check the internal contradictions of democracy. Democracy will always expand its reach, until the last dregs of society can vote and through that run the asylum (e.g., Broward Co. sheriff brought in democrats to register felons to vote, including the Parkland school mass murderer). Unrestricted democracy is why our politicians are corrupt idiots. It always ends in communism, economic ruin, idiotic decisions, unmanageable debt, senseless wars, and societal collapse. Sorry to be so positive, but you can see this all around us.
I feel that way when I go to the mall in Fairfax, VA.
Gwinnett county GA where we live is a similar situation. We are currently renovating the House for sale next spring and moving to the mountains as are many of our neighbors. It’s a combination of burka central and Mexico.
