Two Koreas complete the disarming of 22 guard posts

The North and South Korean militaries completed withdrawing troops and firearms from 22 front-line guard posts on Saturday as they continue to implement a wide-ranging agreement reached in September to reduce tensions across the world's most fortified border, a South Korean Defence Ministry official said.

South Korea says the military agreement is an important trust-building step that would help stabilize peace and advance reconciliation between the rivals. But critics say the South risks conceding some of its conventional military strength before North Korea takes any meaningful steps on denuclearization -- an anxiety that's growing as the larger nuclear negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang seemingly drift into a stalemate.

South Korea reportedly has about 60 guard posts -- bunker-like concrete structures surrounded with layers of barbed-wire fences and manned by soldiers equipped with machine-guns -- stretched across the ironically named Demilitarized Zone....

Sorry but this seems backwards..... you don’t remove key defenses as a “trust building” exercise, first the OFFENSIVE capabilities of North Korea must be seriously reduced. This has serious potential to go wrong....

2ndDivisionVet, your thoughts please?

Are these guard posts of real military value, or an anachronism?

Is this a good, bad, or indifferent step to toward reunification?

It is mostly symbolic. Should the North have decided to go South, all those guard posts could have done is die in place. The sensors that were doing the real work are still in place and monitored; the rapid reaction forces that would have avenged those dead troops is still there - and this says nothing about the thousands and thousands of Samsung SGR-1 sentry bots/drones monitoring the border.

The MSM would be having a public orgy if this occurred under Obama’s direction.

But no. Comcast would rather keep this historical moment undocumented.

Bust Comcast — it doesn’t serve you.

Along with the 26 miles in depth roadway rockslide/avalanche barriers and 1000 foot hillsides in rows to Seoul, the border is secure from your basic land invasion to the capital. Some rumor 26 nuclear bombs buried in the South at the DMZ to cause further damage to Northern Invasion routes.... That rumor has it basis in the joint Taipei-Seoul, Pretoria-Tel Aviv nuclear development project in the late 70’s, a time when the Soviet-led UN kept these four unlikely allies out of the UN official body.

"South Korea's fertility rate set to hit record low of 0.96 "

North Korea: 1.91 births per woman (2016)

South Korea and North Korea both (despite the obvious malnutrition in North Korea) have average IQs of about 106.

South Korea doesn't have enough people. North Korea has a lot of smart people who aren't doing anything productive. They both speak the same language.

Fait accompli.

That’s it Moon, let down the South’s front line defenses to make a conventional sneak attack by the North easier, so you cen get that “United Korea” post Kim is promising you.

reconciliation between the rivals.

Odd choice of words. Usually, "rivals" are involved in seeking the same goal and are equally equipped to attain the goal. North and South are apples and oranges.
