Skip to comments.Rachel Rollins, Criminal Justice Reformer, is the New Suffolk DA

Her winning platform included a push for criminal justice reform, and a controversial policy of no longer prosecuting people for lower-level non-violent crimes, like dealing small amounts of drugs, shoplifting, or standalone resisting arrest charges. Instead, she has vowed to focus on resolving those issues via alternatives to jail, like community service or restitution.
This is the time for us to claim our power and make good on our promises to make true criminal justice reform for the people in Suffolk County, Rollins said at the time. Reform that is progressive that decriminalizes poverty, substance use disorder, and mental illness.
She attracted some attention beyond Massachusetts, and even sparred on TV with Tucker Carlson, the adversarial conservative Fox News personality, who accused her of abetting criminals. I dont have a problem putting people in jail if they are violent, but I believe we have too many people in jail who are not violent, Rollins said on the show. I believe that we are spending too much time on petty crimes that are clogging up our system and costing us more money.

What could go wrong...?
Just be glad you don't live in Massachusetts. - Tom
I cab agree with some of this stuff for first timers, but there needs to be an escalating scale for repeat offenders.
If they are not going to put shoplifters in jail, what is going to stop them?
Also, I would not call “resisting arrest” non-violent. Many police officers are now going fetal, as they call it. Why do your job when the criminals have the city officials on their side?
Did she win originally or is this after a recount?
Regardless - DAs dont make the law, they enforce it. If shes not going to prosecute crimes because they hurt her fee fees shes worthless as a DA.
The newly elected idiot demorat DA in Dallas has the very same philosophy. We’’ll see how screwed up it’s going to be soon.
Yesterday - The United States Of America, A Constitutional Republic
Tomorrow - Just Another Leftist S**THOLE
Well, I guess Phoenix isnt down quite as far as some Lib cities. I do believe the Republican will be the AG. Sadly it looks like the Sinema people will be able to cheat her into the Senate. Disgusting.
Its not that shes not going to put them in jail.
...and a controversial policy of no longer prosecuting people for lower-level non-violent crimes....
If shes not going to prosecute them, how does she propose forcing them to do community service or pay restitution?
Corrected headline: Rachel Rollins, Criminal.
When I read “Suffolk County”, my first thought was Virginia. I pictured retired Colorado homicide detective Joe Kenda, who lives in that county, saying “My, my, my”.
Some people will stop the first time they are handcuffed and put in the back of the cruiser. Why not try that first? If the police cannot handle the prosecutor having a sense of proportion, then they should find something else to do. The goal should not be to have the maximum number of people serving the maximum time possible.
That said, the pendulum can also swing too far the other way, and that is not good, either.
We love Homicide Hunter and Lt. Kenda!
