Output Soars Even at U.S. Manufacturers That Make Stuff from Tariffed Steel and Aluminum
Brietbart ^ | 11/16/2018 | John Carney

Tariffs on steel and aluminum are not slowing down most American manufacturers that use the metals in production, defying forecasts that the higher duties would hit metals-using businesses hard.

There have been many anecdotal reports of strains put on metals using business from the tariffs but the data do not support the idea that these are significant in aggregate. If anything, the tariffs have been accompanied by rising output and rising demand for productive capacity.

Fabricated metals products output rose 0.2 percent in October, the third consecutive monthly gain, according to data released by the Federal Reserve Friday. For the year, output is up 5.3 percent. These are the intermediate stage metals products that later get transformed into durable goods for consumers–in other words the sector most likely to feel the strain from tariffs.

And far from tariffs leaving these metals-transforming plants idle, capacity utilization rose in October to 81.9 percent. This is far above the long-term average of 77.5. Prior to the metals tariffs being imposed in May, utilization was down at 80.4.

I just wish they would quit talking about negotiating trade deals to lower the tariffs.

Put the tariffs up and make them permanent. The market will expand US production faster if it knows the tariffs aren’t going to get reduced in 3 months.

Just wait until we get (hopefully) the promised infrastructure spending.

Exactly what the middle class needs.

I suspect that Trump wants the tariffs to be permanent, but he’s walking a fine line because nobody else in Washington agrees with him.

He has to go through the motions of negotiating long enough for the benefits of the tariffs to become obvious.

It must frustrate him to be the only person in D.C. with a functioning brain.

My step son in law works in sales for fabricated metals. Basically you want some custom pipes made for your assembly plant kind of stuff. He said business is real good, everybody is making their numbers, and prices are up.

These people you speak of are not stupid, they know exactly what they are doing.
Trump is pro United States, the uni-party is only concerned with getting the un-invited Trump out of they way so they can get back to pilfering the serfs.

No, that is not the facts.

Trump’s stated goal is to increase American export sales by encouraging trading pardners to reduce their tariffs to allow import of more American products.

Tariffs are taxes. Trump knows that so he does not favor tariffs for the purpose of taxing.

Trump favors and is encouraging export sales by making trading pardners offers they dare not refuse. He is a nationalist on an international playing field

These gains are more the result of accelerating economic activity across the board. Isolating the benefit/cost of the tariffs is a tricky business. My guess is that the costs are overwhelmed by improved business conditions which allow costs to be passed along.

Trump is using the tariff as a political weapon to counter political forces.

There are only a few FReepers who frequent threads on Economics or Finance much less a “flood.” More like a drip.

Disconcerting to realise only ONE person stands between us and fulfilment of the globalist agenda.
May God guide and protect President Trump.

The Trump imposed tariffs have made material needed for these products cheaper if bought here rather than imported. This means no matter what the state of the economy here whatever is produced here will be less expensive then it would have been without tariffs.

What Cramer said I’d some unnamed ceo’s said economy was cooling. No reason or proof was noted so theirs was an opinion and more than likely reflected sales for their companies rather than the economy as a whole
