Chicago Public Schools enrollment drops by 10,000 students

Chicago Public Schools this fall recorded one of the sharpest single-year enrollment declines since the district’s student population began a steady downturn 16 years ago.

The 361,314 students counted on the 20th day of classes this fall represents a reduction of 10,000 students from last school year.

That’s a slightly smaller drop than two years ago, when enrollment plummeted by about 11,000 students from the preceding year. The numbers continue a long-standing trend that began in 2003, when total enrollment stood at 434,000.

Years of falling enrollment, school expansion and choice patterns have left CPS with tens of thousands of surplus classroom seats, leading officials to consider investing in even more programs to stem losses in South and West side neighborhoods.

Unlike in previous years, there will be less of an impact on the budgets of schools that saw enrollment declines. CPS opted this year to base school budgets on enrollment counts from last school year instead of this year’s 20th day of classes.

I have such a hard time with all of this. We have jobs that need workers. We have young men who are capable of earning a good wage, having a family, buy a house and become good fathers if they only had a skill. Instead of teaching them, people want to import workers who don’t speak the language and don’t share our values.

I think in each of the schools that teach a skill should also teach civics.

I just checked a census source which showed Chicago’s population high point was 1950 with 3,620,962 while in 2010 it was 2,695,598. One million souls less...what does that tell us?

Perhaps your pessimism is justified. But the reality is that virtually every definable groups in the rooted population has an actual--even if presently unrecognized--interest in restoring the common sense to which you refer--even though the abandonment of that common sense predated the 1960s.

Makes a lot of sense (to idiots in a bureaucracy). Budget for fake numbers so you can borrow more money to spend. No wonder Illinois, Chicago, etc., are bankrupt.
