Historic 'Monday Night Football' game nabs epic ratings

If you need more evidence that big scoring equals big TV ratings for the NFL then look no further than this week's "Monday Night Football."

The Los Angeles Rams 54 to 51 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs brought in a 11.3 overnight rating for ESPN. That's the best overnight rating for "Monday Night Football" since 2014.

Monday night's ratings were up more than 57% from last year's week 11 match-up, which was between the Atlanta Falcons and the Seattle Seahawks.

The Rams and Chiefs offered viewers one of the most impressive offensive displays in NFL history.

The two teams, both of which came into Monday night's game with a 9 -1 record, scored 14 touchdowns and gained over 1,000 yards combined. It's the first time in NFL history that two teams scored more than 50 points each in a game. Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes had six touchdowns alone.

It was also the most combined points in a game in the nearly 50 year history of "Monday Night Football."

Did either team field a defense?

So use the flag as toilet paper but score a lot of touchdowns. I guess America is cool with that.

“Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes had six touchdowns alone. “

AND FIVE TURNOVERS!

I know it’s what people want, and I know I’m old and out of step with the target audience.

I don’t like “football” that is pitch and catch, 137 to 129. (Ok, slight exaggeration). I like a little defense, I like for a touchdown to be something of consequence, not just another basket.

My kind is dying off, this is the new “football”, but it’s not for me. I tuned in for about 2 minutes. Watched the Rams pass it down the field as if there wasn’t a defense on the field, (for all practical purposes there wasn’t). I decided I didn’t want to watch 2 teams score faster than a politician takes a bribe.

“Did either team field a defense?”

Defense led to many of the scores. Mahomes had five turn-overs.

Impressive Offense = Bad Defense

” I like a little defense,”

You should have watched the whole game.

“You should have watched the whole game.”

Why? Because I would have gotten “a little defense”, very little defense?

No.

I know there were turnovers in the game that led to points. But turnovers isn’t necessarily good defense as much as it is offensive mistakes.

I still say the quality of play in the NFL has deteriorated since the glory days.

The Rams won’t score 50 when they play the Bears in two weeks.
Bears have real defense.

I know, I know….we all liked watching the ‘50s kind of football that you could leave to go make a sammich and come back and you hadn’t missed anything and the final score would be 10-7. However, the college game has now come into the NFL after years of resistance, and it isn’t leaving because it fills the seats. To grouse about it, is like an old man yelling at the kids, “Get off my lawn!”

Where there any kneelers to the National Anthem and the US Flag?

Because if there still is, I’m not watching.

If they’ve finally stopped that blatant disrespect (and I couldn’t care less how worthy the cause—it’s still a slap in my military brethren’s face) then maybe they’ll get some fans back...

On the other hand, in a high-scoring game, you could miss out on a touchdown, and it's not a big deal because you know the other team is going to go right back down and score. In a 10-7 game, one play could decide the whole thing. It's like a pitcher's duel in baseball, one bad pitch can make the whole difference.

Yes, I could tell because at one point early on the Chiefs defense probably had more penalty yards than Mahomes had passing yards.

The D on both sides was seemed to be pretty good. How else did the turnovers result? Not having watched much NFL over the last few years, I actually thought that picks had been made legal. (It's not, but it doesn't seem to no longer be enforced.)

That, IMO, is what is freeing receivers to be wide open, for long, in stride catches & runs. However, since Os are geared for this type of gun slinging, if there's the slightest hitch, then the QB is either holding the ball too long and can get sacked, or he's throwing it regardless, which is why there are interceptions. Hence, the resulting stats for both teams.

Makes for a fun game, and if you can get over the fact that the athletes hate you & America, then it sort of clears the table to be able to just watch analytically without any passion/care about which side 'wins'.
