Amazon suffers data breach but remains tight-lipped on details

Amazon has suffered a data breach, just days before its Black Friday extravaganza kicks off.

In an email sent to customers, including security guru Graham Cluley (below), Amazon fessed up to the data breach, warning that the company "inadvertently disclosed your name and email address due to a technical error."

"This is not a result of anything you have done, and there is no need for you to change your password or take any other action," the email concludes.

Amazon is telling its customers that there has been a data breach, but it is not sharing any details. What caused the breach? How many customers were affected?

The email * seems * to be legit, as it is being discussed on Amazon forums.

I’ve thought something has been up for several days, my Visa account is inaccessible via any electronic means, either over the phone or via the credit union website. Voice only, live customer service agent, as far as transfers or payments. No other access to Visa accounts. That’s never happened before.

Inaccessible at Amazon, or at your bank?

That’s more evidence of how great ‘Seinfeld’ was. Almost every real-world event can be humorously connected to one of their episodes.

Inaccessible period other than live voice transactions, as far as transfers or payments. The card is still valid and usable, but it’s locked down otherwise. Not just me either, there’s a big notice on their site and a voice notification over the phone. Until further notice.

I’ve been doing quite a bit of business with Amazon of late, but have yet to receive any notification from them of my data being breached. Thanks for the heads-up. I will monitor my credit card activity for any irregularities.

“He who has the gold makes the rules.”

Daily we see the power of the technology oligopolies run by progressives. They and their fellow justice warriors demand to make the rules for others. Meanwhile they wield economic and political power through secrecy, obfuscation, distortion, and lies.

Like tyrants throughout history they view themselves as intellectually and morally superior. The rules they impose on others do not apply to them.

One of Ronald Reagan’s great mistakes was to significantly reduce anti-trust action by the federal government. Since then many industries have consolidated into powerful oligopolies, allied with big government. As a result we have less competition, less innovation, and increasing concentration of wealth. Worse these mega corporations use their economic wealth to control politicians and government.

Bring back competition. Break up the modern day trusts.

You make a good point. One reason Amazon can be so nonchalant about this data breach is that they are a near-monopoly. They are - essentially - the only game in town.

I couldn’t find anything either. But before posting this story I checked a few other websites. They mentioned that they had contacted Amazon, and verified the story.

It’s all very odd. Maybe Amazon is trying to keep things hush-hush, hoping nobody will get upset. Or maybe it’s fake news, put out by who knows. Anyway, it’s worth a heads-up.

I received this email this morning. No issue accessing or using my bank credit cards online or in practice. No idea how compromised I am because of this. My email account is always very locked down as hacking an email account is key to breaking into financial accounts.

I’m holding-off on any new orders, for a while, until I find out what this is all about.

I can’t find a notice on their site, nor have I received a call. Sounds like fake news. It’s all Black Friday deal, over on their site, I see.

Not really. They are the most important player in town, but far from the only.

Much of the stuff sold through Amazon is also sold directly through the manufacturer’s own website.

It IS a lttle more work, but my wife and I are creating the habit of finding items on Amazon, and then looking for a direct maufacturer website, or, failing that, seeing if it’s available from Walmart or other merchant.

Amazon purchases aren’t eliminated, but are significantly reduced.

I don’t think they “got hit”; I think they inadvertently exposed some customer data.
