Austrian Chancellor Kurz: We Can't Undo History, but We Can Do Justice to Our History

Detailed proposals and recommendations for combating antisemitism in Europe were presented on Wednesday at a conference in Vienna arranged by the Federal Chancellery of Austria led by Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz.

The recommendations, called the “Catalogue of Policies to Combat Antisemitism,” were drawn up by the European Jewish Congress with the assistance of academics from universities in Vienna, Tel Aviv and New York.

“Antisemitism and anti-Zionism are getting blurred, but they are two sides of the same coin,” Kurz said during his opening address at the high level conference, titled “Europe beyond antisemitism and anti-Zionism – securing Jewish life in Europe.”

“As Austrians, we have to be honest when we look back at our past – as Austria was not only a victim but also a perpetrator – but we must also look ahead to the future. We can’t undo history, but we can do justice to our history.”

“Today, on European streets, people are being killed again simply for being Jewish,” said European Jewish Congress president Dr. Moshe Kantor at the summit.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave a recorded video speech at the conference, which he was scheduled to attend but had to cancel due to political difficulties with his coalition.

The prime minister said that antisemitism was resurgent again “throughout the world,” and that a new antisemitism has arisen which attempts “to demonize the Jewish state and prevent the Jewish people the right to self-determination in the homeland of our forefathers, the Land of Israel.

“Chancellor Kurtz – Sebastian – you are a true friend of Israel and a true friend of the Jewish people,” Netanyahu said. “I thank you for taking a clear moral stand against antisemitism. You stand firmly in your efforts to recognize history, defend the truth and fight antisemitism in Austria and throughout Europe.”

Hitler came from Austria and there were more Nazis in Austria than in the Old Reich and Austria’s contribution to the Holocaust was significant.

It wasn’t a victim.

I saw a show on the history channel about WWI and it was titled, I think, “Chained to a Corpse”, meaning basically Austria was USELESS and maybe even detrimental to Germany in WWI.

Way off topic, but it was fascinating.

The best thing that Europe can do to combat antisemitism...and atone for past sins against Jews...is to expel every single knuckledragging medieval moslem from their borders.

The American Left, who often say that the US should be more like Europe, can learn something here. Instead of tearing down statues, use them as opportunities to educate people.

Imagine we install in or near every statue a wireless recorded transmissions, or a QR code you can scan into your phone that links to downloadable podcasts. When you see a statue, you tune in or download one of many available historic or educational presentations. Learn about the statue, or the depiction, a biography of the person, political commentaries from a wide variety of people etc.

The Taliban blew up those ancient Buddhist statues because they saw it as heretical. The American left sees statues of Confederate symbols and has the same extreme ideological reaction. Sure they justify it by claiming to be secularist, but the end result and the emotional reaction are nearly identical. They want to blot out history because it doesn’t conform to their contemporary views, regardless of its historical significance and lessons that can be learned from history. They took what could be an opportunity to learn and to teach and instead seek to blot it out as if it didn’t exist. That, imo, is the wrong approach. I agree to an extent, we should not glorify symbols of oppression, but neither should we pretend it didn’t exist. They squandered an opportunity to accomplish something that would be long-term meaningful in exchange for the instant gratification of vengeance for something that occurred in the past.

As Kurz said, you cannot undo history but you can do justice to history. They blew it.

I’m shocked an AUSTRIAN is willing to admit this. I know Austria has been completely intolerant of US efforts to prosecute former NAZIs and has an even recent history of animosity towards Jews.
