Taiwan Premier William Lai said on Saturday he had offered his resignation to the president, who refused it, after the ruling Democratic Progressive Party was trounced in mayoral elections.
"The election results showed that people are not satisfied. For this, I feel sorry, and have offered my resignation to President Tsai Ing-wen to accept political responsibility," he wrote in a statement on his Facebook page.
The election results, which saw the Beijing-friendly opposition make gains as Chinaincreases pressure on the island, are a blow to Tsai.
Beijing has intensified pressure on Taiwan under Tsai, upping military drills, poaching diplomatic allies and successfully convincing international businesses to list Taiwan as part of China on their websites.
Taiwan is still awaiting the result of a closely watched referendum on gay marriage, with activists fearing a win for conservative "pro-family" campaigners could turn back the clock on the island's reputation as a trailblazer for marriage equality.

Due to the sad state of "Western values," and the poor leadership of the Catholic Church et al: authoritarian, Maoist and Stalinist revivalists like Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin get to capitalize on pretending to be the torchbearers for traditionalism and social conservatism against the decadent West or in this case, the pro-Western Taiwanese...
When do we find out China is helping the Dem parry here to change Trump policies?
Their stock market has tanked 27% since trump won.

Taiwan has had a pretty clear 2 Party division since martial law ended in the 90’s.
Its quite similar in its dynamics to the Democrat/Republican split in the USA.

I don’t trust him very much at all, and he is a sinister SOB, but I wonder if Putin has become more nationalist than communist.
A long shot but possible.
Embracing a church, even for personal reasons not related to religion, is something a communist would almost never do.
china is not doing it with glee and their boot camps for those who have gone off the reservation are likely pretty brutal.
Territorial expansion-Taiwan, new islands, North and South Korea,...
Trade wars and intellectual property theft.
Growing Naval and Space capability.
China will destroy the west by COLLUSION. The leftists are allowing it to happen.
Sounds like they have the enemy within working toward “reunification”.

Could you expand on this ?
This is unfortunate indeed.
“The author is being deceptive by calling the KMT (the party of Chiang Kai-shek) Beijing friendly.”
Yes, and no.
The KMT is not the same. They are full of Beijing toadies now who would be happy to rule Taiwan for the ChiComs.
