Taiwan Premier William Lai said on Saturday he had offered his resignation to the president, who refused it, after the ruling Democratic Progressive Party was trounced in mayoral elections.
"The election results showed that people are not satisfied. For this, I feel sorry, and have offered my resignation to President Tsai Ing-wen to accept political responsibility," he wrote in a statement on his Facebook page.
The election results, which saw the Beijing-friendly opposition make gains as Chinaincreases pressure on the island, are a blow to Tsai.
Beijing has intensified pressure on Taiwan under Tsai, upping military drills, poaching diplomatic allies and successfully convincing international businesses to list Taiwan as part of China on their websites.
Taiwan is still awaiting the result of a closely watched referendum on gay marriage, with activists fearing a win for conservative "pro-family" campaigners could turn back the clock on the island's reputation as a trailblazer for marriage equality.

Of course China is doing that. A lot of our media are bought and paid for. And as we see in Taiwan, voters are pretty damn flip about policies.
Taiwan has had a pretty clear 2 Party division since martial law ended in the 90’s.
Its quite similar in its dynamics to the Democrat/Republican split in the USA.

Yes, and no.
The KMT is not the same. They are full of Beijing toadies now who would be happy to rule Taiwan for the ChiComs.
