Mississippi Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith once promoted a measure that praised a Confederate soldier's effort to "defend his homeland" and pushed a revisionist view of the Civil War.
Hyde-Smith, a Republican, faces Mike Espy, a Democratic former congressman and agriculture secretary, in Tuesday's runoff in Mississippi -- the final Senate race to be decided in 2018. The measure, which was unearthed by CNN's KFile during a review of Hyde-Smith's legislative history, is the latest in a series of issues that have surfaced during her campaign, many of which have evoked Mississippi's dark history of racism and slavery.
The concurrent resolution was approved by Mississippi's House and Senate. Hyde-Smith served as a state senator from 2000 to 2012. She was a Democrat before switching parties in 2010, citing her conservative beliefs. Hyde-Smith's campaign did not respond Saturday to a request for comment on the resolution.
The 2007 resolution wasn't the only legislation Hyde-Smith backed that would elevate Mississippi's Confederate history. The Washington Post reported that in 2001, Hyde-Smith introduced a bill as a state senator to rename a stretch of highway to what it had been called in the 1930s: the Jefferson Davis Memorial Highway, after the president of the Confederacy.
And in photos posted to her Facebook account in 2014, Hyde-Smith was pictured posing with Confederate artifacts during a visit to Beauvoir, the home and library of Davis. The caption on the post read, "Mississippi history at its best!"

Watching CNN, The Washington Post and all the other national liberal media outlets swooping in on this race, it really is telling how horribly biased and one-sided they are, the way they move in on the GOP candidate like a lion stalking its prey. It's like the special election in Alabama in 2017, except they can't #MeToo Hyde-Smith, so instead we get 'the evil Confederacy' angle, which I doubt will move Chris McDaniel voters to swing to Espy.
Fake news.
No lie is big enough to help defeat a Republican.
And Democrat senator Robert Byrd was once an Exalted Cyclops in the Ku Klux Klan. Maybe CNN should investigate why so many state and federal buildings are named after him.
When in doubt, play the Race Card. Works every time.
Clik bait for the big Ole Miss Black population. But I don’t think this is anything to worry about in the deep south.
CNN is about 160 years too late, yesterday Black Friday sales
because of the Trump economy saw sales up 24 percent over last year. Black unemployment is at a record low and GOP policies made it this way. GOP will win this election.
Trump is campaigning in the state at two rallies Monday.
Trump is an energy machine, never gets tired.
“Mississippi Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith once promoted a measure that praised a Confederate soldier’s effort to “defend his homeland”...”
It was his homeland, dipshi’tes. That’s the way sovereign states were perceived back then, north and south.
“...and pushed a revisionist view of the Civil War.”
What, like the war was fought for the express purpose of freeing slaves? Brainwashed @ssclown!
The fact is, Hyde-Smith won a plurality on Election Day. Espy is such a loser he couldn't even get a plurality with Chris McDaniel sucking up 16.5% of the vote. We're really supposed to believe he can win, that McDaniel voters will swing to him, or no one but black voters will turnout?
I feel the national media's out-of-touch coverage is going to have the opposite effect, they're just going to mobilize McDaniel voters to show up to vote for someone they didn't even vote for earlier this month. The national media wants to demonize them for not sufficiently disliking Confederate stuff enough in their eyes, it's just going to galvanize Mississippi conservatives to vote instead.
Guess you are supposed to flog yourself for eternity if you are a Confederate state. Name one country that did not have slavery and where are they at stopping it today?
I doubt this will hurt her with the base in Ms; most of whom had ancestors in the Confederate Army and who aren’t at all ashamed of it. The important thing is whether the base turns out- Espy is guaranteed about 40 percent of the vote, if his base turns out en masse and hers does not, he could win.
No. Body. Cares.
...And Democrat senator Robert Byrd was once an Exalted Cyclops in the Ku Klux Klan...
And Hellary’s role model too. The rules are ALWAYS different for Democrats.
As though that’s a BAD thing!
Hey, CNN, grow up...WE WERE ALL AMERICANS IN THAT WAR.
I was lukewarm to Cindy and now I wish I were there to vote for her.
And, I am not a Southerner.
And one reason why the Race Card works is that Republicans usually handle their responses poorly. The cede the high ground to the race-baiters.
For example, Trump has been called a racist. The White House should have released the picture below the very first time that smear came up. It wouldn't convince the hard-core Trump haters. But it would still be an effective push-back.
The civil war was a long time ago. History. It’s ok to honor hero’s of a long ago war. It was a legal war between two opposing forces of America. History is about remembering.
And that didn't make an iota of difference in the midterm elections earlier this month. About 90% of blacks still voted for Democrats.
But, pushing a bill that was in praise of Confederate Soldiers may help her.
The years, 1861-1865, were a long, long, long time ago. But there are plenty of Southerners who can trace their families back to that time and they still have feelings about that, as do quite a few others. She might just get a boost.
I think your right. They are conservatives, even when we don’t win we don’t throw away our common sense and vote for a Crook like Espy.
The economy helps all races and I hope for a change Blacks care more about making Greenbacks more than Espy’s pigmentation. I hate identity politics. We have an 3.7 percent unemployment rate and this should be the merriest of Christmas seasons.
People have jobs, bonus money, they are finally getting raises in pay, and gas prices are down. Why elect someone who wants to kill the Golden Goose?
WTF did Republicans pick Cindy Hyde-Smith?

The Cheap Labor Express had to have an Amnesty Senator
How is it that every single Democratic disclosure I hear about this lady makes me like her more? I have no idea how MS’s white electorate will vote, but I sure hope we’re on the same wavelength.
