I made the move from small pickups to AWD 5-door hatchbacks about 16 years ago, having already abandoned sedans in the early 1980's. Niteowl77 clings to her sedans, but even she is looking at something a bit more "crossover" for the next vehicle. She has frequently - though not always gracefully - admitted that my vehicle is more versatile than hers.
As for GM, it's just an old name for a collection of heritage plants with a lot of Obamite dingleberries attached. The leftist mediocrities running it are apparently either part of the "torpedo the Trump economy" fleet or simply sentient enough to know that there are no longer enough of the "driving cap/blue rinse set who can't see over the steering wheel" to keep their boring sedans viable.
Mr. niteowl77
2018 GM is 2005 Sears...slow motion self destruction.
Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, VW, etc. can make money on passenger cars built in the U.S. So could an American company, if an American maker could somehow free itself from its parasitic infection.
BINGO!
President Trump needs to publically confront US carmaker's management AND the UAW with your statement,
"Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, VW, etc. can make money on passenger cars built in the U.S."
The problem is MANAGEMENT - both Corporate and Labor!
The exact same statement can be said for the federal GOVRNMENT.....absolutely NO reason for the fed employees to be unionized...I’ve been in two unions in my years of work and they are not helpful (except for the trade union I was in ...had school for three years in the evenings) UAW has killed many a job in its quest to collect cash and promote full scale socialism...
Build cars that Americans want.
They should have been broken up.
I rented a new Impala a few years ago. Drove 300 miles to my event one day, back the next. The next day I hurt everywhere.. Of course that was offset by the ringing in my ears from all the road noise I had to endure from that noisy rattle trap.
Why isnt GM closing its foreign plant instead of US plants?
The DOJ needs to seize the assets of GM (gubmint motors)...arrest the UAW leadership, liquidate and "make whole" the estates of former GM preferred-stock and corporate bond holders.
Then, individual and class action lawsuits need to spring up and sue the UAW out of existence.
Amen
absolutely NO reason for the fed employees to be unionized
In a word:
DECERTIFY!
(kill those unions)
Why can’t they make money on smaller vehicles?
Because while cars have shrunk, people haven’t. And an aging population needs more room, not less.
We used to buy bloody subcompacts, but haven’t for years. Then we bought compact, then midsized. Now we have a freaking minivan and a crossover. Not because we needed extra hiproom, but because head and legroom has shrunk so much, these are the only cars we can sit in, get in and out of comfortably.
Thank you, freaking Fedzilla.
Nothing about Obama’s habitual bluster?
Or The Hildabeast’s habitual bluster?
Or Pelosi’s habitual bluster?
Or Schumer’s habitual bluster?
Thats too bad I often rent cars for business and have liked the Chevy Cruze and Malibu models. I got the impression that GM cars were improving in quality and performance too.
“As is often the case, President Trumps bluster is unhelpful. General Motors almost certainly is doing the right thing, as painful as that is going to be for the workers who lose their jobs...”
What a complete joke. Let Trump fire thousands of gov workers and see how NR reacts.
Almost the same story...I drove a rental Impala from Arlington, VA to north Alabama and back over a five-day period. The interior noise was ridiculous and there’s a stretch up in VA where the interstate is awful bad (I had to pull over every forty miles to stretch).
My impression is that they did very little testing and research...just make something and dump it on the market.
My wife went out and did a lot of research about ten years ago...to buy an Audi TT (way more than I would buy), but they built this with a ton of sound proofing within the car and it’s absolutely quiet. Road handling is a pleasure with no back pain after a five-hour drive. You may end up paying more but it’s better than feeling miserable about your car for six to eight years.
What about the REST of the times?
> “As is often the case, President Trumps bluster is unhelpful.”
As is “often”? Uh-huh.
National Review, Ewww ...
Yep. Our senior population needs easy in and out vehicles. Larger door size and higher off the ground. And easy-to-use dashboards/GUIs.
Both management and union have been killing GM.
GM ate $11.3 BILLION of our confiscated taxes in their bailout as of 2013: https://www.thebalance.com/auto-industry-bailout-gm-ford-chrysler-3305670
What will The Wall cost?
As is often the case, President Trumps bluster is unhelpful
Yes, unhelpful to globalists and cheap labor and socialists, indeed.
