Climate Change Is Affordable
Wall Street Journal ^ | November 27, 2018 | Holman W. Jenkins, Jr.

...

The new U.S. report, as well as a United Nations report issued in October, instead aim at frightening the public—exactly the approach that so manifestly has failed to move the needle for 35 years.

Maybe it’s because voters are skeptical of doom-mongering. Maybe they have grown fatalistic about climate change. Or maybe, reflecting the folly of climate campaigners, they’ve gotten a message that acting on greenhouse gases requires giving up prosperity. Reporting Sunday on the French fuel-tax demonstrations, the New York Times noted: “Many in the crowd said that they did not disdain the government’s environmental goals, but that their own survival was more important.”

Bingo. In the minds of too many activists, climate really is a stalking horse for capitalism, consumerism and economic growth. They won’t be happy unless they can also stop mankind’s general quest for abundance.

The new U.S. study finds that it would be especially expensive to adapt to an especially dire climate scenario. No kidding, Sherlock. But climate varies and humans do adapt. Populations and economic activities (like farming) relocate over time. Coastal communities pull back or build dikes.

This is costly, but not so costly that average human welfare won’t keep going up, up, up even under the RCP 8.5 scenario.

The biggest holdup to direct action on climate is showing that preventing these changes would be cheaper than enduring them (after factoring in scientific uncertainty). My suggestion to campaigners: Don’t lead with a carbon tax. Lead with tax reform. Nations need tax reform to restore growth and pay for their welfare states. A carbon tax—as part of a larger package of pro-growth reforms—would be the efficient, noncorrupt way to encourage human beings to do everything in a less carbon-intensive way.

I think I've read something about the devil being in the details.

Um, they are quite open these days (including Congress critters) saying that we have to END capitalism and nationalize our industries, specifically oil & gas (but also medical...)

“Climate Change” is an IQ test.

If you take it seriously, you’re not very smart.

White, fluffy “Climate Change” is falling from the sky as I type. In late November, of all things! I blame my SUV....both of them.

Here's a couple of details:

The batteries used in the electric cars were $1000/kwh in 2010 but have fallen to $200/kwh and will continue to fall so that by 2035 20% of the cars worldwide(led by china) will be electric.

The price of offshore wind turbines have been falling and falling to the point that the Atlantic states are now planning to install. The European companies who are experienced at this have moved into the US to do the work.

No it wouldn't. It would be a corrupt way to transfer wealth to cronies.

And the batteries for the cars are so toxic that most of the plants that produce them are toxic wastelands. They are cheaper because they are often subsidized. They are destructive to the environment. It is pretty bad.

Lithium Ion batteries are non toxic but they all get recycled because the buyer has to trade in the old battery to get the new one.

But the lead battery used in your car is very toxic and gets recycled.

The mercury button battery is supposed to be recycled because it is toxic but most people toss it out.

Liquid Salt Fluoride Reactors is where we should be going. Solar and wind do not make economic sense nor are they dependable enought to produce energy without redundant gas/coal/oil backup generation.

China is going to burn a hell of a lot of coal to produce electricity to lead the world with their fleet of electric cars? How’s that going to fix your global warming issue?

What is the energy loss ratio in charging and discharging a battery?

How many more terawatts will be needed to power these cars?

Are the charge times dropping any?

Will AAA wreckers bring a big capacitor to re-charge a drained out electric car?

Carbon intensive? WTH this is lunacy. If man caused gloBULL warming is preventing another ice age, we should all be celebrating!

Slowly but surely its moving forward as the prices keep falling. You can't stop it. Trump can't stop it.

The writer misses the point: since there is no measurable “climate change” to adapt to, the cost issue is a nugatory consideration..

“Are the charge times dropping any?”

It is still mostly vaporware, but the technology is being developed. It wont be cheap when it first comes on line. I wouldn’t expect to see that technology on a $30K electric car anytime soon.
