Senate defies Trump and votes to punish Saudis for Khashoggi slaying

Defying President Trump, senators sent a strong signal Wednesday they want to punish Saudi Arabia for its role in the slaying of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The Senate voted 63 to 37 to move forward with legislation calling for an end to U.S. involvement in the Saudi-led war in Yemen.

The vote was a rebuke not only to Saudi Arabia but to the Trump administration, which has been clear it does not want to torpedo the long-standing U.S. relationship with Saudi Arabia over the killing.

Sure, the killing of a terrorist sympathizer is worth breaking up a friendship against the terrorists with SA.

What idiots.

If they had a problem with U.S. involvement, why didn’t they do anything when Obama sent the troops to Yemen?

And quite a friendship it is :)

So much so that their complicity in 9/11 had to be deleted in the CIA report and the Bushes were in bed with them so often that i’m surprised they didn’t have kids with them. :)

I know, it’s a lifetime ago in politics and in country relations, but when you were here and you lost friends, it’s not so long ago.

How do we even know Khashoggi is dead? So far I have heard there’s no body. What if he faked his death and is lying low somewhere? Osama bin Laden was able to hide like that for nine years.

You can't defy Trump if he didn't want to be in the war in Yemen. Trump wins again.

This short sighted vote will give Iran the upper hand in Yemen. Wish the USA would make up its mind if Iran is the chief threat in the Middle East or not. If so, they need the Saudis on board. This self defeating vote will probably cause them to look elsewhere for security guarantees. And into the breach will step China. Dumbass move

There’s only one question to be asked: Who were the Republicans?

What a bunch of jerks. The vote tally would probably be the same for a wall funding measure. A lot of people need to go.

Well....the Turks did some backyard research on the ambassador’s residence, and there’s some body parts there....going back to Khashoggi. I will admit that there’s some really bad amateur behavior on planning this out. They could have just killed the guy in some car accident, or gave a dose of something to create a heart-attack. The Saudi team got all messy and made this a five-star episode. The fact that the digital watch caught all of the audio involved and sent it onto some cloud location...they should have suspected that from the minute he walked in.

Good point. For that matter, how do we know Bin Ladin is dead. His body was mysteriously dumped into the sea?

Once again the creeps in THE US Congress are more concerned about foreigners and the business of running other nation states rather than minding their own business and taking care of their citizens. Rome was like this just before it fell!

Winston Churchill said, “Nations don’t have friends. Nations have common interests.” I don’t see how this vote advances US interests. It does advance the interests of Iran.

Our politicians do not often work to advance the interests of the United States. Instead, they pander to a diverse group of personal, political and financial interests. If those other interests coincide with something good for the US, it’s coincidence.
